Last month we got together and enjoyed participating in Kids’ Day. I think this went quite well, and we had several people stop by and chat with the group as well as make contacts with stations elsewhere in the U.S.

I would very much like to thank Dave (KDØAZG) for his efforts in making Kids’ Day what it was, and I would also like to thank all those who showed up and helped out as well.

I think we should discuss and make plans for getting youth into amateur radio as much as possible, and as we have some scouts interested in the radio merit badge, this seems like a good opportunity. I will be bringing the info for the radio merit badge with me to the meeting and hope I can find someone to aid Daryl (NØYHJ) in setting up a merit badge ‘event’ for the scouts interested.

I think we might be able to encourage some of them to become Hams with this event.

Next on my list for people to do…. Get together for our fox hunts. Rudy (KDØBLT) has been setting up fox hunts on every other Sunday in Manhattan at 2:00 P.M. We have participated in a couple, and I think it is very interesting trying to figure out where the ‘fox’ is. Manhattan’s terrain has a tendency to make radio waves, shall we say, ‘interesting’, to chase. I would challenge all hams to participate at least occasionally, even though gas prices are high. Perhaps we could form teams if enough people got involved. I know I’m looking at ways to use APRS programs to help with finding the fox.

Related to the fox hunts, I would like to see MAARS purchase a low-powered fox for use in fox hunts as well as use for demo use at Field Day and Kids’ Day events. If anyone has info on such equipment, or better yet has equipment, they would like to get rid of then please let us know.

MAARS currently plans on having a test session for all license classes on February 10th at 1:00 P.M. at the Red Cross building in Manhattan. Please listen to the radio and watch your e-mail to see if the location, time or level of testing changes. We are normally able to test up through General Class, and if interested in higher, you should be aware that it is not always available.

I hope to see you you all at dinner on Friday at the Sirloin Stockade at 5:30 P.M., and then at our meeting at the Red Cross, 2601 Anderson Ave., at 7:30 P.M.

Fred Stueve will give us a talk on grounding at the meeting.

We will likely discuss how Kids Day went last weekend as well.

I only have a couple of quick things to say this month. First I hope everyone is having a good holiday season and staying dry and warm with the bit of winter weather we have had to date.

Next, Blue Hills Adventures, the group that has organized the Flint Hills Triathlon the last several years, is going out of business. It seems there is little chance that there will be a race this next summer. It is my feeling we should take it upon ourselves to be available for the numerous other bike rides and such in the area for communications. Though less is likely to happen, I’m sure they would gladly accept our help if offered.

Our November meeting was the annual election of officers.

All the currnet officers retained their positions, and we gained Dave Mills (KDØAZG) as Vice-President. I would personally like to thank all of the officers I will be serving with in the coming year with MAARS. I feel like we have a really good group here, and I would have to say we are relatively active, as compared to other areas, from what I’ve been told. I hope we will try to improve and spend more time on the radio, as opposed to less time.

We have also changed up on net control operators lately. Dona Rose (NØZKX) has stepped down as our long held club net control operator. Dave Mills (KDØAZG) has taken her place on the net. Also, Thom Lindsey (KDØBLS) has stepped in to assist, and is sharing duties on the weekly Youth Net with KCØYJO. Thank you to those folks for stepping up, and to Dona Rose for her many years of service.

Our December meeting will be the Christmas Party at the Stueve’s house in Wamego. They are located at 4280 Salzer Rd., Wamego, KS. The Stueves are about 1 mile west of Wamego, and on the South side of Highway 24, just south of Stewart Funeral Home on the right side of the road as you are heading south. There will no doubt be people listening on the repeater to help you get there.

We will start meeting at the Stueve’s house around 6:00 P.M., with dinner at 6:30 PM. MAARS will provide meat for dinner, and you are requested to bring a season appropriate dish to share. (Hopefully we don’t end up with all green bean casserole, hint, hint.) I think we can mention on the Tuesday night net what we plan to bring, so we don’t all say “no traffic” and we know if we need to change our plans.

After dinner we will have a “white elephant” gift exchange. Gifts should be in the $5 to $10 range as a general rule, but whatever you feel appropriate is fine.

For those with children, also please join in a discussion at the end of the Tuesday night net to discuss the way we want to deal with that. I feel like a $5 or so gift is great, but there has been some discussion as to what might be appropriate, such as bring a gift for your own child (they would never know), so I will encourage you all to discuss this on the net (gee isn’t that what we have these nets for?) on Tuesday night and make a choice there. This will be before the swap net, but after the regular portion of the net. If you can’t make it then, too bad, we tried to discuss this at the last meeting.

I just want to point out that all the comments I got from my preliminary e-mail were from people who were at the last meeting, where we had this discussion. We need to as a group better use our nets and meetings to get these items discussed and settled ahead of time.

I will also request that you RSVP on the net Tuesday, so we will have an idea how many will attend.

I hope many of you will join us and have a good time with the group.

LAST on my list for this month is Kids Day. Dave is working on plans for Kids Day to possibly be held again at the Manhattan Town Center Mall. We need as many people as we can get to participate in this event. While we didn’t have a lot of kids show up last year, I think it was a success just in our ability to set up stations and demonstrate amateur radio for those that might have an interest. I hope you will all play a role. Kids Day will be held on January 6, 2008.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas Party, and to serving as President for 2008.

I apologize that this month’s newsletter is text only.

I would like to thank Myron (WØPBV) for his program that he presented at the last meeting. I think it was very interesting to most members.

This past Monday, November 5, Scott and I gave a speech to a local Boy Scout group here in Manhattan. I hope that down the line we will be able to work with these youth and gain more interest in radio. The Scouting members present seemed to have interest in our speech and there was some discussion of the Radio Merit Badge.

This coming meeting, which will be November 9, 2007, will be the MAARS annual election of officers. We will choose our leadership over the next year. Persons wanting to run for office or who wish to vote must be paid members in MAARS.

MAARS will accept nominations for officers from all and of all licensed amateur radio operators.

We will hold our usual eating meeting around 5:30 here in Manhattan at the Sirloin Stockade. Our meeting will be at 7:30 at the Red Cross building here in Manhattan.

I hope we will see you all there. MAARS needs your support.

The September meeting for MAARS was the annual picnic which was held in Long’s Park in Manhattan. Myron (WØPBV) and Francis (WØEVJ) set up radios and antennas for HF, and were able to make contacts on CW. Thank you to Myron and Francis as well as all those who attended.

The picnic was preceded by a fox hunt. Christine Chainey (KCØYJN) acted as the first fox, and was mobile for the first part of the hunt. This made for a lot of running around town for the first part of the hunt. I believe Dave (KDØAZG) was the first to find her.

Dave played the fox for the second hunt; however, not everyone finished the hunt, as we were making plans for the picnic.

I believe a good time was had by all, and some of us learned a thing or two as well. Our October meeting will be held on the 12th at 7:30 PM, at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson in Manhattan. We will also have our usual eating meeting at 5:30 PM at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan.

The October meeting is the last official gathering where you can pay your dues for the coming year. Dues are official due by the end of October, and in order to run as an officer you must be paid for the following year and must be a licensed operator.

We will attempt to find a person or prefereably persons who are willing to act as a nominating comittee to make nominations for the November elections. The official offices are: President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. This past year Scott (ACØCY) has acted as a sort of combination Secretary and Vice-President. I would like to thank Scott for the work he has put in with that slot, and I hope we can fill all the slots for the coming year. As you might have heard Dona Rose (NØXKZ) would like to find someone to take over her slot on the Tuesday night net. The only requirements are a willingness to take control of all of us and take the check-ins. The net runs from 9:00 PM local time until it’s done… usually less than one hour. If you are interested, please contact me on the air or e-mail kc0dwx@cox.net. Mike Moore (NØPVU) is acting as the interim coordinator for WARN (Weather Amatuer Radio Network). Persons who are interested in joining WARN, or would like more information, should contact Mike on the repeater.

We currently have no scheduled program for the October meeting, so if you have something you would like to share with the group, please contact me so we can arrange that as well.

I noticed that we are about $200 ahead of where we were this time last year. This is a huge step, as for the previous few years we have been slowly losing funds. There are are many reasons we have made improvements and everyone in the club has played a role, so thank you.

Lastly, I apologize for this month’s newsletter being a bit late. We were out of town over the weekend and are just now getting back to normal.

Last month’s meeting was exciting and informative as Francis (WØEVJ) aided by Scott (ACØCY), demonstrated some antenna theory. The demonstration was enjoyed by all and especially those that were newer to amatuer radio.

MAARS picked up several new members last month and we greatly appreciate the support of all the members and hope that we can continue to grow in the future.

July 31st we did not have a Tuesday night net, as the newer repeater went down around 8 P.M. The output was very weak and as we have learned the finals are out. We were back up and running, the same evening and I appreciate the help of those that were aiding on the air as we switched over to the stand-by (older) radio.

I would appreciate input as to how well the older repeater is working, as it seems like many have said that it receives much better than the newer radio. This older radio is putting out 5 watts of power. For this month’s meeting we will show a video we have watched in the past called Tesla. The video discusses the life of Nichola Tesla. I know many of you have seen this one in the past, but I hope you enjoy seeing it again and I hope it will be brand new to a few others. We look forward to seeing you at the meeting on Friday. Please feel free to join us for dinner as well at 5:30 at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan as well.

Greetings to all. The weather is getting hotter and Field Day and the 4th of July have passed. I hope you all had a safe Independence Day holiday.

We had a wonderful time at Field Day here in Manhattan and while I won’t repeat all the details that our secretary Francis (WØEVJ) has told us about I would like to thank all that attended. A special thanks to Fred (KØTCS) for bringing Little Jeffrey, Daryl (NØYHJ) for bringing a radio, Josh (KI4LZK) for bringing a radio, Scott (ACØCY) a computer, Kenny (KBØRPV) for his tower that he hadn’t even seen for 2 years thanks to us, Christine (KCØYJN) for breakfast and food runs, Mike (NØPVU) for misc. goodies and a night time beverage for a couple of us up working the radio through the night and Sylvia (KCØYJO) for her patience when I was less than patient, and her ability to put up with all the work that can come with being around a ham once or twice a year. Iknow I should be thanking more so forgive me for those I missed. Our July meeting will include making plans for our annual picnic as well as a demonstration by Francis (WØEVJ) on antenna theory aided by Scott (ACØCY). We have a couple of newer hams on the air as well and I have to admit I’d like to hear more people coming back to them. I’m not always the best myself but let’s do our best to keep amateur radio alive. I hope you will all join us Friday for our meeting at 7:30 P.M., and our eating meeting at 5:30 P.M. as well.

Field day was Saturday June 23 and Sunday July 24 in the Manhattan City Park. We had old and new people in attendance. The weather was favorable, although the humidity was high on Saturday morning after the rain on Friday night. Sunday morning was ideal with a slight breeze.

Brian, KCØDWX, MAARS president, led the group. He brought much equipment to our operating site. This included the newly renovated portable antenna tower belonging to Kenny Grant, KBØRPV. He also brought our MAARS banner, AC power generator, tarps for shade, extra coax cable, tools, HF radio, antenna tuner and many other items.

Fred, KØTCS, came with his large AC generator, named “Little Jeffrey” after the nearby Jeffrey Energy Center, where Fred was once employed. Unfortunately, “Little Jeffrey” displayed a “Murphy’s Law” condition when it was attempted to start up. Fred demonstrated that He was a “Real Ham.” When the going gets tough “Real Hams” get going. Although Fred is aged in the eighties, He continued working a large part of the day to find and correct the malady in “Little Jeffrey,” which turned out to be a stuck carburetor float. Mike, WØMAF, assisted Fred in working on “Little Jeffrey.” In the mean time, we had portable operating power from Brian’s smaller generator unit.

Putting together and mounting the 4-element triband beam antenna required a group effort. This included Mark, KCØQAS; Tim, KCØMDC; Kenny , KBØRPV; Scott, ACØCY; Brian, KCØDWX; Josh, KI4LZX and others. There was some difficulty in mounting the beam onto the tower, due to not having the proper size mast to match the antenna fittings. Francis, WØEVJ, brought a homemade portable vertical antenna. Daryl, NØYHJ, brought a Butternut HF vertical antenna.

Our operating class this year was 2A Kansas. Our operating call sign was ACØCY. Those operating the radios included Josh, KI4LKZ; Sylvia, KCØYJO; Mark, KCØQAS; Scott, ACØCY; Brian, KCØDWX and others. Our total number of radio contacts was 190.

Brian, KCØDWX. brought his RV vehicle for the use of those staying during the night. On Sunday Morning, Christine, KCØYJN, supplied a pancake and coffee breakfast for those present. We operated until the deadline Sunday morning. Most of our operation was on the 20-meter band.

There were a total of at least 23 people either participating or visiting our Field Day event.

This has been a big past month for MAARS. First we held our garage sale fundraiser which along with members dues, will actually keep us in the black this year. Membership seems to be on the slow rise as well so let’s hope we can keep this going.

Second, MAARS participated once again in the Flint Hills Triathlon. This year we managed to be involved in much more than counting bicycles as they went by. We were directly responsible for getting aid to one injured participant in a location where cell phones were not doing the job. I’ll let the volunteers tell their story there, though.

I would like to thank those people who helped with communication at the Triathlon, Scott Chainey (ACØCY), Christine Chainey (KCØYJN), Josh Jones (KI4LZK), Francis Sable (WØEVJ) and Sylvia Carter (KCØYJO). These members did an outstanding job and got some valuable practice at emergency communications.

For our June meeting Francis Sable will be presenting a demonstration on antenna theory. We will also need to make plans for this year’s Field Day, which we will be holding at one of the shelters in Manhattan’s City Park. I hope to see you all at the meeting, and please join us for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade.

Flinthills Triathlon

On a breezy June morning, several hundred people decided to get together and swim in a cold lake, bicycle up and down some hills and run with the wind. Many others leave their warm beds just as early to support their crazy habit of pushing their bodies to the limit. These are the athletes and the volunteers of the Flint Hills Triathlon.

One group of six people has been asked to assist in “just being there” and keeping an eye on bicycle riders that pass by their location. For those people the morning will pass slowly, as they count yet another bicycle as it passes their location, not even thinking of why the vehicle is sitting there. These are the members of the Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society. Thinking of sitting in their vehicles, chatting with each other, drinking some coffee and counting bicycles, they meet up hoping that this will be good PR for the club. With three members stationary along the route, one acting as a chase vehicle for support, another as a liaison with the Red Cross, and the final member being a shadow to the race coordinator, none of us expected anything very exciting to happen. We learned quickly that small actions helped many others to return to their families safely.

The morning started with watching people line up, jump into the cold lake and swim without getting drowned from the arms and legs flopping all around them. Then when they just couldn’t stand the cold water any longer they finished and ran to a transition area. This is where the radio club members kicked into action. We were going to watch bicycles!! If bored enough, count them as they passed by. The shadow alerted everyone that a bicycle had left the area, time to start counting. Everyone was ready.

Station 1 saw a bicycle and reported back to the shadow. Station 2 saw a bicycle and reported back to the shadow. Station 3 saw the first bicycle and reported that it had turned around to head back. Well, so much for excitement for a while. As station 2 started counting bicycles coming past him for the second time, he was alerted that there had possibly been an accident nearby and that a cyclist was down and injured. Station 2 let the shadow know what was going on. Jumping into action, looking around for someone to tell and then remembering the phone numbers to the ambulance crew. Phone the crew, get them started that way, brief them and update them as soon as possible. Radio signal relay problems added to the adrenaline of the situation. Unclear signal from the station 2 person’s location made it difficult to update the ambulance to the exact location of the patient that needed their help. Trying other possible means of cell phone and CB radio with a roving motorcycle group, nothing was working. Finally, the radio signal cleared and information was flowing again. An older female, fallen for unknown reason, was unconscious with scrapes and bumps to the head and shoulder. Who was she? The race coordinator wanted all the information he could get. He had to know who it was and where were they. After a few more radio communications were made an identity was established for the down rider and notification of the family was made.

This event didn’t affect many people within the race, but this and other equipment malfunctions on other people’s bicycles caused for other notifications to the race coordinator to be made. The stress lessened with the quick relay of questions and answers by the radio club members. As the morning went on everyone was accounted for from the route they had taken and nobody was lost. They all returned to the park to drop off their bicycles and take off running into the wind to finish their tour of the area in their own special way.

This turned out to be a busy morning with much more to do than just drink coffee and count bicycles. It was a great team-building project for club members, as they were dependent on each other for the information to be obtained and shared. It started out a PR-building exercise but became much more for people that needed their help.

For the March MAARS meeting, the club had the opportunity to see the Riley County Mobile Emergency Command Post. Thank you to Pat and Laurie for providing us with this opportunity.

We have reserved the Poyntz shelter at the Manhattan City Park for Field Day. Field Day will be the 23rd and 24th of June. The cost was $70. This should give us good access to the public for promoting radio.

Also, in the last month we managed to make a good bit of progess on the tower/trailer. Several members got together, and with the aid of Dominic (KCØLKZ) and Joey (KCØSSZ) and their tools, the trailer is assembled and to a point of needing a few finishing touches.

For our April meeting we plan to have Mike Barelli (WØMAF) and Richard Keyes (WB8LCB) to give a presentation on APRS, and other digital modes of operation. I suggest that you attend this meeting if you have any interest in APRS or other digital modes. This should be a great opportunity to learn.

For those of you in WARN, this meeting may be of interest as there are plug-ins available for the APRS software that will display watch boxes as well as radar images on top of the locations of the persons transmitting data through APRS.

I hope to see most of you there, and I can tell you that this should be a very interesting meeting. Hopefully our guests will join us for dinner as well at the Sirloin Stockade. I have set up a list-serv for MAARS and hopefully people in this area interested in amateur radio. To join send a blank e-mail to submaars@thecartersworld.com. I hope everyone enjoyed touring the Riley County Emergency Mobile Command Post at MAARS February meeting. I am sorry I was not able to attend the meeting. A big thanks goes out to Pat and Laurie for the work they do.

Our March meeting is on March 9th and Francis Sable (WØEVJ) will be presenting us with a history of our club. We will also be discussing the now roughly 1.5-year-old project we have been working on. If you are involved in radio in this area, then we need your help in completing the project. Completion of this trailer is overdue and we need your help to finish it off.

Also up for discussion will be locations and plans for Kids’ day in June as well as Field Day. While these fall one weekend after the other (the 16th and 23rd), I think we should do our best to participate in both to boost amateur radio as much as we can. I want to remind all those interested we will be holding a test session on March 10th at 2:00 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson. We should be able to test all classes. You need to bring $14 cash, a photo ID, Social Security Card or Tax ID, and any CSCE for any previous test credit.

For those who upgrade, you can go home and use your new privileges after you pass the test, but you must follow your call sign by “temporary AG” or “temporary AE” for general or extra class, respectively.

Starting this month we will also go back to the age old tradition of having our dinner meeting at Sirloin Stockade unless anyone has a complaint. If you have a feeling on this let me know but I will plan on this being our dinner location otherwise.

So, with that our March meeting will be Friday, March 9th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan, and our dinner meeting at 5:30ish at Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan. I hope we will see you there.
