    At October’s meeting we discussed how to get more people involved in amateur radio, as well as getting more people at some of our meetings. We will be working on some of those ideas and looking for others as well. We would like to hear any ideas you might have and encourage you to let us know. I can be e-mailed at kc0dwx@cox.net.

    One suggestion we had was to set up a Kids’ Day station. In 2007 Kids’ Day will be on January 7th and June 16th. Look later in the newsletter for more info on this event, and consider if it is something we can be involved in.

    Our November meeting will be the election of officers. Which for the last few years has pretty much been a nomination and acceptance of officers. As Francis (WØEVJ) pointed out on the net we should have a nominating commitee. I asked Scott Chainey (ACØCY) to fill that role and he accepted. If any one is interested in holding an office or has suggestions, they should feel free to get with Scott by Friday’s meeting. We will also take nominations from the floor and self-nominations are allowed.

    We will also need to finalize a date for our annual Christmas party. Fred and Nadine have gratiously offered to allow us to hold our party there again this year. Dates discussed were the 2nd and 9th of December. We held off on choosing a date, so we better coordinate our schedules and decide what date worked best.

    Our meeting will be at the usual time at the Red Cross in Manhattan, We have decided to meet at Chili’s around 5:30 for dinner. We hope to see you on Friday.

    Our September club meeting was our annual picnic, and served as a work session for our club project. It seems we have learned a little bit about sand blasting if nothing else from this project.

    I’d like to thank all those who attended the picnic and aided a hand with painting, scraping and sandblasting. I am reminded that we still have parts laying around to paint and assemble we need to pick another day do some work.

    Once again we are coming near the end of another year. Membership dues are due and should be given to Scott Chainey. Members need to pay their dues by the end of October to be eligible for a club office and/or to vote.

    November will be our annual election/or as has been the case the last several years, accepting of officers. Anyone interested in running for an office or in helping in any other way should let myself or Scott know.

    While membership is low as is club activity, I hope we can continue to move on and attempt to better the situation.

    Our meeting for October will be on Friday the 13th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan. Our eating meeting will be at 5:30 P.M. at Valentino’s in Manhattan. I hope we will see you there.

    Well, as we didn’t have a meeting last month, we will keep this short and sweet this month. First on our agenda needs to be finishing up the trailer project. The trailer is still at Myron’s house and needs to be sandblasted and painted. My initial thought is the weather will soon be cooling off, we should take any chance to get a start on it, and then use our September ‘picnic’ meeting to do more work. We usually have a picnic in September so let’s use this chance to accomplish more owrk on the project. With any luck we will have nice weather for it.

    As I’m sure you have all heard, we will be losing two more hams in the area. Henry Bachman (KAØSWM), and Erin Crouch (KBØTXL), will be moving during the month of August. Henry and Erin have both served as officers for MAARS in the past and have been a asset to the Manhattan amateur radio community. We will miss them in the area, but expect to hear from them in their new location.

    Don’t forget the Kansas State Convention will be in Salina on August the 20th. It is an excellent chance to find bargains and visit with a great number of people in amateur radio.

    Our August meeting will be August the 11th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson Ave. Our dinner meeting will be at Grizzly’s, located in the Village West shopping center where Alco is located. All amateurs and guests are welcome. We will see you there.

    At our last meeting, we considered more work on the portable tower project. As of this past weekend Fred Stueve, KØTCS has received a price quote of $300 to sandblast the trailer. We will need to decide if this is the amount we would like to spend for this stage of the project.

    The club has also not decided on Field Day events for the event, which will be on June 24th- 25th. We will attempt to make plans for the event at our meeting.

    On June 4th Myron and Nancy Calhoun, WØPBV and NØKMU; Fancis Sable, WØEVJ, and myself aided with the annual Red Cross Triathlon. The event was delayed by an hour or so, but finally went on. There were a couple of equipment proglems but there were quickly solved, and our services were appreciated. Fortunately there were no emergencies that needed our attention.

    Our meeting this month will be at the Red Cross in Manhattan at 2601 Anderson Avenue at 7:30 P.M., with our eating meeting being at the All Chinese Buffet located at 2304 Stagg Hill Rd. at 5:30 P.M. We invite all members and nonmembers and guests are welcome. We hope to see you there.

    The MAARS meeting for May 12, 2006 was held at the Stueve residence west of Wamego.

    We had a buffet type lunch. It was announced that the new transmit antenna for the repeater has been installed.

    We have been asked to provide communications assistance for the Red-Cross sponsored Flint Hills Triathlon, which is scheduled for Sunday June 4. This year’s Field Day is scheduled for June 24 & 25. The Field Day site favored by most was the Fred & Nadine Stueve residence.

    Thank you to Fred and Nadine Stueve for their hospitality in allowing the club to meet at their house last month and this month so that we may attempt to work on the trailer we took on as a project almost a year ago.

    In April there was some discussion as to what needed to be done to the trailer, and now with the weather getting warmer and the days longer, we hope to accomplish some of this work. Our May meeting will be at Fred and Nadine Stueve’s house once again, 4280 Salzer Rd. in Wamego. We will meet around 5:30 to 6:00 P.M. in order to grill some hamburgers and hot dogs. Bring something to drink. The hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided, as well as chips.

    Last month we also had some discussion about Field Day possibilities. If anyone has come up with further ideas, please feel free to share them with the club.

    As of Friday May 5th we are operating with the new antenna on transmit at about 120 ft. up the tower. We are putting 50 watts to the line and getting about 8 watts reflected. Ka- Comm acknowledged this was not good, and will look into the problem.

    The receive antenna is our original antenna, and is located about 140 ft. up the tower. The receive signal is going through the duplexer to help filter out any unwanted signals. While at the site with Ka-Comm I checked a few things, and found a less than perfect connection, which may have been at least part of our inconsistent receive problem we have had lately. Only time will tell.

    We hope to see you all at the meeting this Friday, May 12th.

    The MAARS meeting for April was held at the residence of Fred and Nadine Stueve on April 21, 2006. Those attending brought food dishes and we had a buffet lunch.

    Work on the portable antenna tower was discussed, and plans were made to have the next meeting at the Stueve residence again to continue with work on the tower.

    Brian, KCØDWX, announced that the new antenna for the repeater was expected to be put up soon. The repeater will then operate with separate antennas for transmit and receive, with one mounted below the other on the tower.

    Brian annouced that he has been asked for MAARS to provide radio communication for the Red Cross-sponsored Flint-Hills Triathlon on June 4, Sunday. MAARS participated in this event last year.

    There was discussion about the upcoming Field Day on June 24 and 25. Various options for the location were City Park, Scenic Overlook, Zoo parking lot and others. It was decided that the Stueve residence was a best choice.

    There were 10 persons in attendance at the meeting.

    A big thanks goes out to Pete Sias, NØOY, from Salina for presenting us with last month’s program on radio direction finding. I was surprised to see the simplicity of a couple of his tools for Fox Hunting. Perhaps we can consider having a fox hunt in the near future and combine it with our club meeting our a picnic. Scott, ACØCY, mentioned an upcoming National Fox Hunt Day so we may want to keep that in mind and organize an event based on the National Event.

    Field Day is only about two months away. As always Field day the fourth full weekend in June, making it June 24-25th. And, as is usually the case, this will be the same weekend as the Country Stampede in Manhattan.

    Now is the time to make our plans and decide where we would like to hold the event this year. Last year we camped out at Pottawatomie State Lake #1 north of Westmoreland, Kansas. I think everyone there had a great time and enjoyed the get together and company more than radio operating. Bring your ideas for locations to the April meeting so we can discuss what we would like to do this year for Field Day.

    Our April meeting was postponed by one week, due to the holiday, and will be held April 21st. We will hold the meeting at Fred and Nadine Stueve’s house, 4280 Salzer Rd. in Wamego. Our meeting time will be 6:00 P.M. and will include a potluck dinner and looking at the trailer we took on as a club project.

    Everyone attending should bring a dish to share and serving utensils. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. Table service will be provided as well as coffee, water and some carbonated beverages. As we will likely be outside you should also try to bring a lawn chair for each person attending, if you have them.

    The MAARS meeting for March was on Friday, March 10, 2006.

    We had as a guest speaker Pete Sias, NØOY, of Salina who gave a lecture and demonstration on radio direction finding, and also showed several items of DF equipment.

    There was discussion of progress that has been made in making repairs on the portable antenna tower owned by KBØRPV. Myron, WØPBV, presented information about the ”Emergency Management Support Association of Kansas.”

    It was voted to move the next meeting date to the third Friday in April, April 21, 2006, because of the Easter Holiday weekend falling on our regular meeting date.

    There were 14 people present at the meeting.

    Thank you to Scott Chainey, ACØCY for sharing his ‘tape measure’ antenna at our February meeting. As Scott suggested, this would make a good project for a pre-fox hunt meeting. On Saturday the 4th, I met with Richard Bailey with the American Red Cross. Richard is part of a new committee on communications. He volunteered for relief in Katrina, and will likely come to a future meeting to share some of his experiences with us. Some information I’d like from everyone is what kind of service you would be able to do in an emergency, and is everyone interested in practicing during disaster drills? What kind of equipment would you use in helping out? This information is wanted by the communications committee so they can get a feel for how they would deal with a disaster.

    I attempted to find someone to share information on Bluetooth technology with us at our March meeting, but seem to have struck out. I’ve done some reading myself and will share what I have learned if I don’t find someone between now and then.

    On February 27th, Ka-Comm installed our new antenna, only to have the same problem we had with our old original antenna resurface. The antenna was installed on a short stand-off, and when we questioned them as to the proximity to the old antenna, they claimed that postion really didn’t make much difference. Shortly thereafter, they showed a .5 watt difference in refliected signal by moving the position of the antenna. Since the problem was still there, I had them connect the radio to our original antenna, and we are transmitting on Myron’s (WØPBV) antenna. Ka-Comm is supposed to be back with us to continue work on the problem.

    Our next club meeting is March 10th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan. We will be eating at Grizzly’s in Manhattan before the meeting at about 5:30 P.M. Grizzly’s is located at 3003 Anderson, near Alco. We hope to see you at the meeting.

    Our program at the meeting this Friday will be Fox Hunting, presented by Pete Sias, NØOY from Salina.

    The MAARS meeting for Feb. 10, 2006 was held in the Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Ave. at 7:30 P.M. Brian, KCØDWX, presided.

    It was announced that insurance and approval to install a new repeater antenna on the tower had been obtained. We are now waiting for the K-com tower climber to get to it.

    Scott, ACØCY, demonstrated a home-made 3-el 2m antenna made from pvc pipe and tapemeasure metal tape for the ant. elements.

    There was discussion about what ant. tower zoning restrictions might be in place for erecting a tower in Wamego, which is Scott’s home QTH . He is thinking about putting up an ant. tower . It is known that ant. towers have been previously used in Wamego, but it is not known what the City policy is at this time.

    On Sat., Feb. 10, Brian, Scott, and Daryl met with a group of young Boy Scouts and gave them a demonstration of on-the-air radio operation on the 2m repeater and on HF.

    The meeting ended at about 9:00 P.M. There were 9 persons present at the meeting.

    I’d like to start off this month by thanking Erin Crouch for her time spent over the past couple of years putting together the newsletter for MAARS. It is much appreciated when someone takes over a responsibility such as Editor for a club newsletter.

    I will be acting as the editor for the newsletter with this being my first issue. I hope to get more input from members as to the types of things they want to see and have to donate for printing in our monthly newsletter.

    The February meeting of MAARS will be on February the 10th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan. All members and non-members, licensed or not, are encouraged to attend. Scott Chainey will be demonstrating a tape measure antenna he built. The plans are designed for fox hunting but it sounds like it could be an interesting and useful antenna for other uses. We will also have at least one more meeting in the future with foxhunting as the topic, so take notes as this might be a good way to get a head start on a fox hunt later in the year.

    On February the 11th we plan on demonstrating amateur radio to a few boy scouts organized through Daryl Hasenbank (NØYHJ). Anyone who has ideas for this demonstration should share those at the meeting.

    We will also try to organize our cabinet and the magazines we have at the meeting to try to make better use of our space in the radio room at the Red Cross. Hopefully in the near future we can start doing occasional lunch meetings there.

    As usual we will hold an eating meeting before the club meeting. We will meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan at approximately 5:30 P.M. I hope to see you all there.

    The MAARS meeting for Jan. 13, 2006 was presided by Brian, KCØDWX, at the Red Cross building starting at 7:30 P.M. It was announced that a new antenna is expected to be installed soon on the repeater tower, also that the repeater site rent of $36 had been paid. There was discussion of participating in the JOTA program this year if there was interest in it. We may have a fox hunt event later. We may schedule a special meeting to construct a DF antenna for 2 meters to be used for a fox hunt. It was announced that MAARS members can take CPR training for just the cost of the training book. There was discussion about the details of refurbishing the portable antenna tower belonging to KBØRPV, which some members are working on. There were 11 people present at the meeting.

    I hope that all of you had a wonderful Christmas and a great start to the new year. I hope this year will find an increase in interest and efforts with the local amateur radio community.

    I’d like to thank the officers that are leaving office, Donna-Rose Hackerott (NØZKX), and Erin Crouch (KBØTXL) for the efforts over the last several years. Of course I’d also like to thank Francis Sable for being an officer in the past and continuing to be an officer in the 2006 year. I look forward to working with Scott Chainey (ACØCY) over the next year as well.

    Our first meeting of 2006 will be this coming Friday the 13th, at the American Red Cross in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson Ave. We hope to hear any ideas you might have for the coming year such as programs or efforts we can make such as communications efforts in the community. For our dinner meeting on Friday, we will meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M. We encourage all area and visiting amateur radio license holders as well as those with an interest in radio to attend both of our meetings. We look forward to seeing you there.
