Hello to all. I hope you have done well over the past month. I would like to invite you all to our August meeting, where Herm Belderock, WVØR, will present us with a program on NTS message handling. I think fewer and fewer people are aware of how to deal with NTS messages, and if you have an interest this will be a good time for you to attend. We will plan on the meeting starting around 6:00 P.M. with pizza and a presentation. We will actually try to have food available a bit ahead of that to help us all get a bite to eat before Herm’s presentation. As our meeting will be at the church again this month and we are having food, we will skip our normal eating meeting, and we need to be out of the church by 8:00 P.M., as they have some other activities as well that night. It might be a good idea to show up around 5:45 to get some food in before the interactive meeting.

Also, the repeater committee has been together and made some choices for things to work on with reference to the repeater. I hope and believe the club will support the choices made by the committee, and while there is no promise it will fix our issue, these are some things that need to be done.

Again I’d like to remind you all that the meeting will be limited time wise, so we will need to keep any discussion and covering of past issues limited.

On October 3rd we will be providing communications for the Yellow Brick Road Bicycle Ride. We need as many hams as possible on this bike ride, as there are 4 routes (overlapping at points), and the longest of which is in the neighborhood of 80 miles. Get with Sylvia (KCØYJO) if you are able to help with this ride. As it stands we may not have too many fixed hams, but more mobile. Feel free to offer ideas, but again, we’ve done these several times with great success, now so let’s make sure it is constructive.

I hope you will all join us for the meeting on August 14th at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Ave. We are not sure what room we will be in, but we will have tables to eat at and work on our presentation by WVØR.

If you would like to have pizza at the meeting, please let us know ASAP and plan on bringing $5 per adult. Any money left over will go towards the picnic in September. Water will be available on location, but if you want something else to drink, bring that as well. We look forward to seeing you there.

This past month MAARS held their annual Field Day event in participation with the ARRL annual Field Day. I’d like to thank all those who helped with equipment or food, or simply by manning a radio. You all know who you are, and it takes participation to make it work out.

The logs totaled up to approximately 381 contacts, give or take a few. Of particular note was David Soldan making 38-plus contacts in 42 minutes on CW on Sunday morning. Here is a breakdown of contacts and band.

While I was at the event very little, I enjoyed seeing everyone there, and was very happy to have both Dave and Daniel Soldan join us. Also, Erin Crouch and Henry Bachman visited us, as well as a few hams in the area that could not make the event. I’m also glad Gordon KBØYYO had the chance to participate with the group. Thank you all.

I’d like to also make a brief mention that we will try to make our meetings a bit more organized in the future. The officers hope we can get more interest in meeting topics for the group and less in general discussion. The goal here is to present people with a learning experience, and minimize business discussion. The officers will hold a separate business meeting monthly to discuss what direction we would like to guide things, and discuss topics members bring up that they would like us to consider. Those topics will be discussed at the officer meeting, and the general findings will be returned the following month. In many cases, a committee may be formed to work with these issues. I have dealt with too many things for far too long in a haphazard fashion, and I apologize.

We will hopefully join together at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan for dinner around 5:30 P.M., and then move on to the meeting at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross, 2601 Anderson Ave. for the meeting. I believe we will have a guest, Terry Hoss, KAØBHO, to discuss briefly the help they need for the MS 150 bike ride to be held in the Topeka-ish area in September.

MAARS participated in the annual ARRL-sponsored Field Day event on June 27 and 28, setting up in the Manhattan Northview community park. A list of those attending were: Rudy, KDØBLT; Mike, NØPVU; David, KDØAZG; Rich, KBØZGY; Myron, WØPBV, Gordon, KBØYYO; Brian, KCØDWX; Daniel, KBØOTV; Leo, KDØCLX; Sylvia, KCØYJO; Mark, KCØQAS; Mike, WØMAF; Dale, WNØWWY; David Soldan, NØIN and Francis, WØEVJ. Also visitors: Erin Crouch, KCØTXL; Henry Bachman ,KAØSWM; Ronald, NØQIM and Phyllis Fulmer.

Those bringing equipment or other supplies for the Field Day operation were: Daniel, KBØOTV, Ten-Tec Omni HF radio and power supply, homemade 40m vertical antenna; Rich, KBØZGY, FT-450 HF radio , MFJ pwr supply, 2 m radio with portable antenna and battery; computer for logging, Mark, KCØQAS, 4 KW motor generator, gas grill; Dave, KDØAZG, G5RV HF antenna and mast, 5 KW motor generator and other items; Sylvia, KCØYJO, food and drink supplies and other items; Phyllis Fulmer, food and drink supplies; Mike, NØPVU and Dave, KDØAZG brought camper units for overnight stay at the site. Mike also supplied and prepared a pancake breakfast for the group on Sunday morning.

The weather was hot on Saturday, but was helped by a breeze blowing through the open shelter. Sunday morning was cooler and pleasant. The operation went the full time allowed, which was 1:00 P.M. on Sunday. We missed our usual FD power source, which was the motor generator of WWII vintage and provided for many years by Fred Stueve, KØTCS, which He named it Little Jeffrey. It had become a MAARS Field Day tradition.

We will start off this month by saying thank you to all the people who helped with the CASA bicycle ride at the end of May. We had a good turnout even though we thought things were going to be tough at first. It is always nice to see how many people come out even after a slow start. MAARS definitely played a role and helped out with the event.

Our June meeting will need to be Field Day planning. The location that we picked was the Northview Community Park in the northeast part of Manhattan. A few comments have been suggested in reference to no trees or electricity available for some of our comforts and set-up. Let’s come to the meeting with any suggestions for Field Day. Things that will need to be discussed are food, power sources, antennas (including erecting them), radios, modes of operation and logging.

Once we make plans, we need to follow through with them. If we want the ability to work the same band on multiple radios, we will want to look at spacing stations out if at all possible. This would probably be most important if we plan on working modes other then phone.

Our club has not typically been big on the contest aspect of Field Day, but there are those who are more interested in it lately and enjoy making as many contacts as possible, so let’s keep that in mind as well. If you can’t make the meeting, but have things you like to pass on, feel free to e-mail me and I will print those out and take them to the meeting, as well.

I hope to see you all at the Sirloin Stockade around 5:30 for Dinner, and then join us for the meeting at the Red Cross in Manhattan at 7:30 P.M.

As I start off this late newsletter it seems at least for the last day or two, we are almost into early summer as opposed to just spring. Hopefully everyone is keeping up with the grass and staying cool without making the meter on the electric line spin too fast.

I’d like to start out by saying thanks to everyone who helped with the ‘Cabin Fever Bike Ride.’ We received the following from Diane Novak, “Just received a survey and it had the following: ‘The support vehicles were tremendous! Those guys deserve a gold medal.’ ” This is good news, and we dealt with everything that happened, including the 146.955 repeater failing. We all managed to get over to the MAARS repeater and even with less than perfect conditions, carry on the ride. I personally think that this is what Ham radio is about, we are smart enough to work on the fly and make things work. We listen well to weak signals and make things happen. I can also tell you now that the problem with the 146.955 repeater was what was originally discussed, the fuse holder melted down and from this the amp was lost, which also caused the amp to act like an attenuator and further weaken the signal. These things happen, and they must be dealt with, and in this case I think it was excellent practice for us all. The next bike ride will be the CASA bike ride here in Manhattan/Riley County on May 30th. We hope to get a good turn out, and will likely use the MAARS repeater. On notes of the repeater, it seems clear that we have a problem that is related to the location we are at. MAARS has had some excellent ideas floating around from members about locations and cures. It seems relocation might be the best cure if a suitable site can be found. I have to add to this that some sites, while at first looking promising, would put our antenna at a lower elevation than with the mast and pole we are on now, while at the same time moving us further away from an area that would cover all of Riley County. Let’s add to this that 200 ft. of hardline and a new antenna plus the cost of installation is likely above the funds in the MAARS accounts.

Either way, we are in the process of testing a site or two where antennas that might be ‘somewhat suitable’ might already exist, and thus allow us to test the site before spending too much money to make it what we need it to be. At our meeting I hope we will be discussing Field Day plans, as the event is approaching quickly. I hope we can make some plans and then follow through so we don’t have the problems with too many of our antennas or transmitters being too close together.

Next, I’ve said this many times before, but I’ll do it again. If there are subjects you want to know more about, ask if we can have a meeting on that topic. Better yet, reseach it assuming that others want to know more and share it with the group.

Last, thank you to Rudy, KDØBLT, and Rich, KBØZGY, for coming over to JC and playing this past weekend at the QTH of WØCEM. Rudy spent a great deal of time on the tower, just ‘hanging around,’ and bolting down a rotator that had come loose. I personally did an excellent job of watching the work unfold.

I hope that we can have a good turn out at the meeting on Friday, and we will have a good turn out at dinner as well. We will meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 and then join each other at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson Ave. for the MAARS meeting. I apologize for the lack of excitement with this month’s meeting, but hope we can get together nonetheless.

First I apologize for the brief non-formatted form of this newsletter. I originally had a nice newsletter going then realized that our meeting schedule coincided with Good Friday and the Easter holiday weekend, so we changed our meeting to Friday the 17th of April. As I’m one of the world’s best procrastinators, you are now receiving this e-mail as a late newsletter.

If you have made it this far in reading this, then I would like you to know that our monthly MAARS meeting is Friday the 17th of April at the American Red Cross in Manhattan at 1701 Anderson Ave. at 7:30 P.M. local. We also encourage you to meet for the eating meeting at 5:30 at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan.

Our goals for this month’s MAARS meeting will be a possible discussion of the Cabin Fever Bike ride from last weekend, as well as talk of the upcoming CASA bike ride on May 30th. Myron (WØPBV) will take a moment to discuss some communications needs with local entities, and the need to actually test those comms. in the near future as well as on a regular basis.

We will also need very badly to discuss plans for our Field Day location for this year. If you have ideas as to where we should hold the event, please let us know. If you can’t make the meeting, then forward your ideas to myself or another person so they can be shared at the meeting. Field Day should be a practice event for emergency communications, as well as a good chance to share radio with the public.

It seems that spring is upon us, and with the warmer weather teasing us out of our caves, I hope we have a great year coming for us. There seems to be a great deal of interest in amateur radio on many levels, and it is up to us to make sure we are there for the calling.

Last year in March we proved ourselves to the organizers of the Cabin Fever Challenge Bike Ride as valuable communications, capable of doing what cell phones couldn’t. By the end of that ride they wanted us back, even though they went into it somewhat skeptical.

We then worked a bike ride for CASA in Manhattan, and then back to another ride in Pott. county for the organizers of Cabin Fever. The short story is Cabin Fever is coming up on March 28th, and we plan on wowing the group this year, even more than last year.

Sylvia (KCØYJO) will be speaking a bit at the Friday MAARS meeting about this upcoming bike ride, and sharing the maps for the bike ride with the club. This year’s course seems a bit more challenging for us to cover but I’m sure we will do well.

It also seems we may have another group interested in having us help out with bike rides on a regular basis, and Myron (WØPBV) will share info he has with us at the meeting.

On March 8th MAARS held a test session where 14 applicants were tested for either new licenses or upgrades. We had several KSU students there, as well as Gordon (KBØYYO, upgrade), Laura (new license), Lawrence (WØLKC), and Sylvia (KCØYJO, upgrade) just from the top of my head membership. I also believe we will gain a couple of new members from our test session, and look forward to seeing them at the meetings.

With more and more new membership, I look for all of you to bring up meeting topics that might interest these new hams. While some of us may have seen a J-Pole and built one several times, it is a great opporturnity to share that knowledge with the new people out there.

We also hope to have some new things in reference to our interference problem to share at the meeting. For information on that, please be there.

I will remind you all that we usually have dinner around 5:30-ish at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan, we then meet at the Red Cross in Manhattan at 7:30 for our meeting. We hope to see you all there.

Hello to all and I hope you have enjoyed some of the nice warm weather we have had over the past week or two. I apologize for the lack of a formal newsletter, but I’m behind in info to include and want to make sure you know of a couple of very important pieces of information as soon as possible.

First big thing for this month is our meeting location. Due to that fact that there is a major remodeling project occurring at our normal meeting location of the Red Cross, we needed to find a different location for this month’s meeting. We have been given permission to hold our meeting at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue in Manhattan. Anyone needing help finding this location, please let me know I will try to help you out as well you should feel free to get on the repeater on your way to the meeting and ask for help. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it is beyond our control.

Next we need very badly to get a feel for the number of people who can help out with communications for the Cabin Fever Bike Ride on Saturday, March 28 in Pott. County. We made an excellent impression on this organizers of the bike ride, as well as the Manhattan bike ride last year, and need to continue our support or fail horribly at what we claim we as hams can do. Please contact Sylvia (KCØYJO) at the meeting or on the nets, and let her know if you will help with this ride. It is far better to have too many people than not quite enough. APRS capabilities and such might be a nice addition to last year’s bike rides for those that can help in those ways.

I intend to give a short (you can all hope) talk on solar power as a possibility for your personal stations, and give you a few beginner tips. I will be covering with some limited knowledge, batteries, charging, commercially available solar panels and lighting possibilities. I will try to bring along a couple of photos, as well as examples of low voltage lighting that might be useful.

MAARS will meet for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 for conversation and dinner. After the meeting will move to the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue in Manhattan, for our regular club meeting to begin at 7:30 P.M. I hope to see many of you there.

I’d like to start off by apologizing for not having a ‘real’ newsletter for January, and then for it being so late. I hope you everyone out there has had a good holiday season, as well as a good start to the ‘New Year.’

There area a couple of things that must be said, even if in an informal newsletter. First, thank you to Victor and his family for hosting our Christmas party this year. Those of us who made it had a great time and enjoyed the quality company we had to share the evening.

Next, I’d like to congratulate the officers for the coming year. The officers for 2009 are Scott Chainey, ACØCY, Vice President; Christine Chainey, KCØYJN, Treasurer; Francis Sable, WØEVJ, Secretary; and myself, Brian Carter, President. Everyone I’ve worked with in the MAARS club has been a pleasure, and I’d like to thank Dave, KDØAZG for his help with MAARS in the past year, and wish him well with his co-WARN coordination with Mark, KCØQAS.

Our first meeting will be January 9th at 7:30 P.M., and will be a quick get together with ideas and suggestions for the following year. We should think of ideas for getting more members, ideas for meeting topics, and discuss other ideas we may all have for the future. The meetling will be at the Red Cross in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson Avenue.

We will also join for dinner at 5:30 or so at Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan for dinner and conversation.
