Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio November 2005

It’s time for our annual elections. Our November 11 meeting of the Manhattan Amateur Radio Society will be at 7:30 PM at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson in Manhattan. As club participation has fallen over the years, it has been harder and harder to find persons interested in running for office or for committees, so I suspect there will be discussion along this line.

In order to run for office or to vote you must be a current paid member of MAARS. Nominations may be made from the floor and self nominations are allowed. We hope to see you at the meeting.

    Francis Sable, WØEVJ

The Oct. 2005 MAARS meeting was at the Red-Cross building on Friday the 14th. Erin, KBØTXL , conducted the meeting in the absence of Brian, KCØDWX. There was discussion to select a nominating committee for new officers at the Nov. meeting.

Next, was discussion about the previous proposal to pick up the portable antenna tower owned by Kenny, KBØRPV, for the purpose of repairing and repainting it as thanks to him for allowing MAARS the use of the tower on Field Days, etc. Scott, ACØCY, and Francis, WØEVJ, agreed to make arrangements to pick up the tower from Kenny’s QTH and deliver it to Fred’s QTH, where the repairs will be done. The tower has since been moved to Fred’s, KØTCS, location.

There was discussion about the repeater antenna situation. It was voted to expend up to $300 for a new repeater antenna to replace the present temporary antenna if that was recommended by the repeater committee.

Dec. 10 is chosen as the date for the annual Christmas party to be held at the Fred and Nadine residence.

This is to remind you that the Nov. MAARS meeting is scheduled as the annual meeting for the election of MAARS officers. We need to replace at least 2 officers who are resigning their present office position.

The officers of this society, shall include a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. Officers are elected by a majority vote for a term of one year. A nominating committee shall present a list of one or more nominations for each office. Additional canidates may be nominated from the floor at the annual meeting. Self-nominations are accepted and encouraged. The election for contested offices shall be by written ballet. Newly elected officers assume their responsibilities at the Dec. meeting, with the exception of the treasurer. The new treasurer takes over within one month after the records are reviewed by the old and new treasurers. Dues must be paid by Nov. 1 in order to vote at the annual meeting.

I’d like to thank Scott Chainey, ACØCY, for his arranged tour of the Macdonald Lab at Kansas State University in August, and apologize for my lack of making it on the tour. We appreciate the effort to take us on something new.

For September, MAARS had a picnic/cookout at the Oregon Trail Nature Park. Members brought items to cook on the grill, as well as items to share. Myron (WØPBV), Francis (WØEVJ) and Scott (ACØCY), brought HF equipment and set up a working HF station in order to test out various pieces of equipment they had, such as new purchases and grab and go kits.

Our October meeting will be held on the 14th of the month. This will be our next to the last formal meeting of the year. Club dues should be paid at this meeting if not before. We also need a couple people to volunteer for the nominating committee. This is a little more important this year as at least two officers will not be running again next year. The club elections will be at the November meeting, so all nominations need to be made by that point.

The other major topic for our October meeting will need to be plans for our annual Christmas party. A location, time and date need to be set, as well as a partial ‘menu’.

Our eating meeting on October 15 will be at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan at 5:30 P.M. We hope that you come and join us for dinner before the regular club meeting. At 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan. We look forward to seeing you there.

Instead of the regular monthly meeting on the second Friday of the month, the annual picnic was on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Oregon Trail Nature Park, located north of Belvue. Myron, WØPBV and Francis, WØEVJ, set up separate portable hf antennas near the Park shelter.

Myron made some on-the-air contacts with his portable hf station. One of the contacts was in Oregon on the 20 M band. Scott, ACØCY, also connected his hf transceiver and checked its operation.

Brian and Scott provided the grill for the cookout. Approximately 12 persons attended the picnic.

    Newsletter, August 2005

    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio August 2005

Over the past month we have done more experimenting with our new repeater. Most recently KaComm brought us a new antenna to try on the repeater. This new antenna seems to get rid of the desense problem we had when going through the duplexers to a single antenna, which suggests that even though it seems to work well, there is a problem with our old antenna. The antenna that KaComm has loaned us is not as good as the old antenna so you may have noticed some decreased performance in the repeater.

Our next meeting will be this Friday the 12th of August. We will be meeting earlier than usual at 6:00 P.M. and we will meet on the KSU campus for a tour of the Macdonald Lab. Scott Chainey, KCØKTZ has made the arrangements. The best parking area will be the parking lot between Ackert Hall and Rathbone Hall. More information will follow in the newsletter.

Also don’t forget the Kansas State Amateur Radio Convention will be held on August 21st in Salina. I plan to take a few items that have been floating around and have been stored at my house for the last couple of years. I do not plan on returning with any of these items and will pass on a list of what I have on the net and at the meeting for anyone interested.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday.

    Francis Sable, WØEVJ

The MAARS meeting for July was conducted by Brian, KCØDWX, on Friday, 7-8-2005 at the Red Cross Building, starting at 7:30 P.M.

There was discussion about volunteering MAARS members to offer to make repairs to Kenny’s (KBØRPV) mobile antenna tower. Items mentioned were to purchase and install a new steel cable and to re-paint. A committee was made-up consisting of Mike, Henry, Scott, Fred & Francis to work on this. It was voted to allow an expenditure of up to $200 for this purpose.

Myron, WØPBV, read an interesting story from a 1947 QST about an ice storm that afflicted the Midwest area, mainly Kansas in that year. Mentioned in the story were William Schrenk, WØPAH, and Cliff Simpson, WØYUQ, Manhattan, and others. It gave details of some of the emergency message traffic they handled during that time.

Plans were discussed about having the annual picnic at the Oregon Trail Park, near Belvue, on Sunday, Sept. 18 or Sunday, Sept. 25.

A decision was made to install a separate receiving antenna at the repeater if necessary to relieve the desense problem with the new repeater transceiver.

For the next MAARS meeting , we will meet in room 119 of Cardwell Hall, KSU, for a tour of the facilities there.

There were 13 people in attendance

The Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society’s next meeting will be Friday, July 8 at the Manhattan Red Cross at 2601 Anderson Ave. We will meet at 5:30 P.M. for dinner at Valentino’s, then meet at the Red Cross building for the meeting to be held at 7:30 P.M.

Members of MAARS participated in Field Day this past month. Several club members joined together in camping out Friday before Field Day, and then were joined by more members Saturday for the official event. A Butternut vertical antenna was set up and a 20 meter dipole was made and raised in the trees. We again had the use of Kenny’s (KBØRPV) tower on which we assembled ‘part’ of the club’s beam and raising the United States flag as well as the ARRL flag. A large tent was provided by Erin Crouch and Henry Bachman, and served as a place for communications as well as an area for the kids to play. Little Jeffrey was used for power and provided by Fred and Nadine Stueve.

MAARS made a total of 80 contacts under the call sign of KCØDWX on the 20 and 40 meter bands. The radio used was a Kenwood TS-430 and the MFJ differential tuner was used for tuning the antennas. Thank you to all who attended for helping make this a successful Field Day.

    Field Day participants

Fred (KØTCS) and Nadine (NØUHF) Stueve, Little Jeffrey.
Henry Bachman (KAØSWM), pancakes, staking out our spot
    Erin Crouch (KBØTXL); tents
Francis Sable (WØEVJ), misc equipment and radio contacts
Scott (KCØKTZ) and Christine Chainey, lots of time making contacts and logging
Myron (WØPBV) and Nancy (NØKMU) Calhoun, watermelon (makes a picnic complete)
Kenny (KBØRPV) Grant, tower on a trailer
Brian (KCØDWX) and Sylvia Carter, misc.

I’m sure I’ve missed some but again thanks to all who were there.

    Report for 5/13/2005

It is announced that MAARS has been requested by the local Red Cross to participate in a Red Cross sponsored Triathalon on June 5th at the local state park. It will begin at 7 AM. We are to provide communications and monitoring of the bicycle race.

The Field Day location for this year is to be at Pottawatomie State Lake 1. It was reported that the Tri-county Bio Terrorist group simulated emergency testing was satisfactory.

Paul (W8IJI) of Junction City advises that he will be moving to Minnesota in the near future.

Scott, (KCØKTZ) offered to give the group a tour of McDonald lab on the KSU campus at some later meeting.

    Report for 6/10/2005

It has been confirmed that this year’s Field Day operation will be at Pott. 1. Henry (KAØSWM) has picked a site location. We may use the MAARS TS-820 for a HF radio. Fred (KCØTCS) will supply the power generator. We expect to get the 40-ft. mobile tower from Kenny (WBØRPV) to mount the tri-band antenna on.

Report for MAARS Field Day 6/24-6/25/2005

This year’s FD operation went well. The site was ideal, although as usual the weather was hot and humid. We operated one transmitter, which put us in the category of 1A. Brian, KCØDWX and Henry, KAØSWM, supplied a computer and logging program, which worked very well. KCØDWX, also supplied the transceiver, a TS-430, a dipole antenna, a Butternut vertical antenna and other equipment and supplies. Kenny brought his mobile tower for the tri-band beam antenna. And as traditional, Fred, KCØTCS, supplied the electrical power with his generator, named Little Jeffrey, as he has done previously for many years. Some of the participants camped overnight Friday and Saturday. Henry provided a pancake breakfast on Sunday morning. There were about 12 or more persons attending or participating.

I’d like to thank all who participated in the Red Cross Triathlon. On June 5th Myron and Nancy Calhoun, Francis Sable, Erin Crouch, Scott Chainey, and myself (Brian Carter) provided communications for the bicycle leg of the Triathlon. Fortunately there were no incidents that needed to be reported. Again thank you for helping.

The June meeting of the Manhattan Area Amatuer Radio Society will be a little different. We are combining dinner and our meeting together. You should plan to be at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson by 6:00 P.M. on June 10th to join us for a potluck dinner. Please bring a dish to share and serving utensils.

For the meeting Jon Held (NØRYQ) will give us a presentation. We will also discuss or plans for Field Day.

Field Day will be held on June 25th and 26th at the Pott. County State Lake No. 1 near Westmoreland. There will be many of us camping overnight and a good time should be had by all. Hopefully we can make some contacts and practice our emergency communications set up procedures.

Remember our meeting will start at 6 P.M. with a potluck and will no doubt last a while. I hope to see you there.

    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio May 2005

Our next meeting for MAARS will be May 13th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan. We have been asked by the Red Cross to provide communications at the Red Cross Triathlon which will be held on June 5th. This is a Sunday and the triathlon begins at 7:30 A.M. I think we should make an effort to help out with this event, but if we decide to do this it needs to be done well. We have also been asked about communications for the Country Stampede and I informed them that this is the same weekend as ARRL Field Day.

We will also need to form a committee to discuss Field Day and make the plans for the event. Hopefully we can have some turnout for this event as well as have participation. Let’s make sure that we not only are there and set up radios, but that we use them as well.

For our eating meeting this month we will go to Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan. We hope to see you there at around 5:30 P.M. All amateurs and guests are welcome.

    Newsletter, April 2005

    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio April 2005

It is time for the April meeting of Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society. Our meeting will be held on April 8th at 7:30 P.M. at the Manhattan Red Cross, 2601 Anderson Ave.

This month we will have Junius Penny of the KSU solar car team will be our guest speaker. Hopefully he can give us an update of how the solar car team is doing and their latest improvements.

A location for Field Day should be selected (probably Pott. Co. Lake 1 as that is where the most interest has been), as well as starting to make plans for the event. Let’s try to make this event a success. If everyone makes a little effort we can all have a great time.

We hope you make the meeting and don’t forget the eating meeting at 5:30 P.M. Look elsewhere in the newsletter for the location.

    Newsletter, March 2005

    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio March 2005

Topics for the month’s meeting that you might think about ahead of time:

WARN (Weather Amateur Radio Network) has had some people express interest in getting their amateur radio license. Anyone who might have some time to teach or help teach classes for this would be encouraged to do so. We would like any other suggestions on this topic as well.

Meeting programs. I seem to have come to a mental block as to what members would like to have, or if you even want programs at the meetings. I would like some discussion on this, both what you could share, as well as what you would like to see at our club meetings. I would like your feelings for what length of program you feel is best to keep interest and without boring those who aren’t too horribly bad.

For our meeting program if all goes well we will go take a tour of the newspaper. Those interested in going through the paper will travel from the Red Cross to the newspaper after our business meeting.

I hope to see you all at the meeting

The MAARS meeting for Friday, Feb.11 was conducted by Brian, KCØDWX, starting at 7:30 PM. On hand for viewing by members was the new repeater transceiver unit, a Vertex model VXR-7000 V, with a 50-watt output capability. It is expected that it will be installed at the repeater site in the near future. It was voted by members present to discontinue the liability insurance now carried by MAARS due to the high premium rate that we have been paying. Brian passed around a form for members to sign-up for various committees for Field Day, RFI, Repeater, etc. There were 11 people in attendance at the meeting.

    Newsletter, January 2005

    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio January 2005

It’s time to start another year with MAARS. Congratulations and thank you to the officers who are all staying in the same office for another year. Also thank you to Fred and Nadine Stueve for hosting the Christmas party again this year. A good time was had by all.

Our January 14th meeting will be at the Red Cross in Manhattan, KS. The new repeater has come in, so everyone will get a look at it as well as some discussion on the controller, as S-COM has officially quit making the 7K series in the last month. They will soon be coming out with a newer and better line of controller.

We will also need to think of events we would like to promote for this coming year. Programs for the club that you would like to see or put on for the members. Hopefully we can get off to a strong start. The interference being gone has helped us all to leave our radios on more so hopefully we will be encouraged to spend a little more time with the hobby.

We will also meet for dinner at Valentino’s in Manhattan before our meeting at around 5:30 P.M. We encourage you all to come to the meeting as well as dinner before the meeting. Feel free to bring any guests who might be interested in amateur radio.
