    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

    As the weather has cooled off even more lately we have come to the last official meeting of MAARS for 2002. As usual our November meeting will be our annual election of officers. We only have approximately 20 official voting members this year. Hopefully this isn’t a reflection of the number of memberships we will end up with.

    It has been fun working with the officers over the past year although I’m sure at least on my part there is more that I could have done at times. There will be a list of names from the nomination committee published in the newsletter. We also are quite happy to take nominations from the floor and self nominations are allowed as well. Persons who are unable to attend the meeting may vote by written and signed proxy vote given to another member.

    I hope to see a good turnout at the meeting. We will also be finalizing our plans for the annual Christmas party, which will be in December. Hopefully anyone with input will feel free to attend and share your opinion.

    The meeting will be held Friday November 8 at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross building in Manhattan located at 2601 Anderson Ave. We will also gather at the Sirloin Stockade for dinner around 5:30 P.M. Any of you younger hams who don’t have a way of getting to the meeting might check on the air and see if there is someone driving your direction as I know many would be happy to help out. I hope to see many of you there on Friday.

    Hello Everyone. We are in the wacky season of fall. One day you’re cold and the next you’re back in short sleeves. Later this week the NWS is forecasting temperatures in lower 60s . That will be nice if it turns out that way.

    If you remember last month’s newsletter, I stated that I would be running for another term as your vice-president. Well, unfortunately things have changed and I will not be able to do so. With my enlistment into the Kansas Army National Guard, I have been enrolled into a school that means a lot to my career in the Guard and to the unit in which I am assigned. So, I must do what I have to at this point and apologize for the change. Brian (KCØDWX) did call and asked me if I would help Norm (NØJCC) on the nominating committee. I have been super busy and I have not had the opportunity to contact Norm.

    I do apologize to Brian and Norm for not coming through. With this school starting and still working my regular job, time is just not on my side. Once this school is over, hopefully I will be able to get back to normal.

    I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to be your vice-president. It has been an honor and I will run again in the future. So, again thank you for your votes in the past and your support. I honestly believe that MAARS is one of the best clubs around, with a lot of enthusiastic and experienced hams that love to share their knowledge. This is proven by the amount of youth that we have on the repeater. Enjoy your upcoming holiday season.

    MAARS Meeting for Oct. 11, 2002. There is discussion of what date to select for the annual Christmas party. The 2 possible options mentioned were the 7th and 14th of Dec. There is discussion of the possibility of connecting the repeater to the internet. This idea was rejected.

    Volunteers for a nominating committee to seek candidates for MAARS officers are solicited by Brian, President. Norm, NØJCC, agrees to serve on this committee. The annual meeting for election of officers will be the next meeting on Nov. 8th. Self-nominations of paid-up members will be accepted at the meeting as well as those presented by the nominating committee. A vote will be held by written ballot for any contested offices. All members should plan to attend this meeting if possible.

    Hello everyone. The weather is cooling off quite a bit now so hopefully you can get any outside projects done that you’ve been putting off because of the heat. It won’t be much longer and we will be complaining about how cold it is.

    Last month’s meeting was our annual picnic, held at the Oregon Trail Nature Park in Pott. Co. The weather was perfect for the picnic and everyone had fun conversing, eating, playing football and playing music. Unfortunately we did have some uninvited guests buzzing around the food area. I guess flies are the price you pay for a picnic during nice weather, might be better than ants, anyway.

    Our next meeting will be on October 11, 2002 at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross building in Manhattan. As this is the last month before our annual elections, we need to get a couple of people to form a nominating committee to consider nominations for officers this coming year. Offices include President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.

    MAARS will be holding a test session on Saturday, October 19, 2002. If anyone plans on taking an exam for the Extra class license let us know as soon as possible so we can make sure we have enough volunteers. Also if you are interested in becoming a volunteer examiner, let me know and I can pass the info on so you may do so. We’ve had a great number of people taking exams over the past year and an above average number of youth.

    Before you come to Friday’s meeting, don’t forget to join us for dinner and conversation at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan. Several members gather there at about 5:30. As always, dinner and our meeting is open to all members and non-members. We will hopefully see you all there.

    Well, it looks like the weather is making its change. Since the weather has started to get cooler, it sparked a couple of thunderstorms that brought some wind, rain and lightning. There must have been some concern with the storm we had this last Thursday night because the National Weather Service gave me a call and was asking for a report. With that, remember that Kansas does have a history of having tornadoes in every month of the year. Yes, that even includes January. In the early to mid 1940s Kansas had a tornado in January. From 1950 to 2000, we have had tornadoes in every month except January. Well, it is October and it is time for an election committee. I don’t know who will be on the committee (yet), but I am sure they will do a fine job as has been in the past. In speaking of elections, I have thought about running again. After long consideration I will go ahead and throw my hat back in the ring for another term as the club’s VP. It would be nice to have a little competition this year. So, I would like to challenge all of those members who have never been officers, to step up to the plate and swing the bat. If you strike out, better luck next year. If you get a hit, you have a title for a year and a little responsibility. It doesn’t hurt and it can be fun. So, in the word of a famous game show announcer, “COME ON DOWN.” It’s your turn in a MAARS Officer Seat.

    This will not be a formal report of the August MAARS meeting since I was unable to attend the meeting due to car trouble on my way to the meeting. My brakes went out suddenly because of brake line leak. It could have been worse. It could have happened when I got into Manhattan traffic instead of at the gas station where I stopped on the way.

    We had no formal meeting in September, but we did have the annual MAARS picnic on September 15 at the Oregon Trail Nature Park, located near Belvue. It was a beautiful day, sunny and mild temperature, and it was an ideal day for outside activities.

    A reminder: there is a VE exam scheduled for Saturday, October 19

    The last meeting for the Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society was July 12. We discussed our picnic for the month of September. Briefly discussed videos that the library has had for amateur radio, as well as the Riley County fair.

    Our next meeting will be on Friday August the 9th, at 7:30 P.M. at the American Red Cross Building in Manhattan. One of the main topics for discussion will be the interference we hear off and on through the repeater. So far we have had no luck locating where the interference comes from. One possibly solution might be to install tones on the repeater. Any discussion or suggestions on the topic will be welcome.

    We will also briefly mention that it will soon be time to think about forming a nominating committee for nominating officers for next year. The November meeting is when elections are normally held and you must be a paying member of the club in order to vote or hold office.

    Last we also very strongly need suggestions and ideas or even volunteers for programs for the club. Any thing that interests you more then likely interests others and would be an excellent topic to share with us all.

    We hope to see you at the meeting on Friday and don’t forget to join us for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan before the meeting at around 5:00 or 5:30.

    Greeting Everyone,

    I hope that everyone is coping with the hot temperatures that we have been having. It was nice a week ago when we did get that day of showers. During that storm I did lose my HF dipole and one of the trees that it was in. No big deal though. I have more trees and the antenna has been sent off and is getting repaired.

    WARN has not had any activations. I think our season is well over by now. However, we still could see some severe weather if you remember September 7th of 2001. That is the day that tornados started in the Salina area and moved north into Geary County and into northern Riley County. I am sure with our present weather conditions we can relax, but we still should expect severe weather just in case one decides to sneak in on us.

    If I have my date correct, the Salina Hamfest is on August 18th at the Bicentennial Center. You might want to mark that on your calendars if you have not already. I have plans on attending the hamfest this year.

    Also, I do believe that we are having another test session on August 17th. I am pretty sure that it will be at the Red Cross. Brian (KCØDWX) will have all of the information for those who know someone who wants to get their license or upgrade their current license.

    The MAARS meeting of 7-12-2002 began at 7:30 P.M. with president Brian Carter in charge. The date and place for the annual picnic is discussed. Henry, KAØSWM, puts in a motion for the date of Sunday, September 15. This motion is agreed to by the members present. Nadine, KØUHF, will check on the availability of the Oregon Trail Park for that date.

    It is announced that Riley County Fair will be held at the Cico Park on the dates of July 25,26, and 27.

    The last meeting for the Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society was on June 14th. We discussed Field Day and made our final planning. June 15th MAARS sponsored a test session and we had two technician class hopefuls attend. Both young ladies passed their tests and have since been granted their license.

    June 29th and 30th Field Day was held at shelter number 4 at Tuttle Creek State Park. Radios that were used for Field Day were provided by Henry Bachman (KAØSWM), Paul Schliffke (NØUZN), and Daryl Hasenbank (NØYHJ). A bucket truck was used to support the club’s antenna with a rotor. Members assembled a Butternut antenna supplied by Pete Garfinkle (KD7GBG).

    Power was supplied by Little Jeffrey, thanks to Fred and Nadine Stueve. Other members aiding in setup and providing much needed equipment were Mike Moore (NØPVU), Wayne Dorothy, John Skare (NØPVT). Thank you to Laurie Harrison (KCØKTY), for arranging for our location as well as providing materials for public information, if only we had had some people stop by.

    Our next meeting will be Friday July 12th, 7:30 P.M. at the American Red Cross building located at 2601 Anderson Ave. Part of our discussion will include the club sponsored videos located at the Manhattan Public Library. We will also further discuss plans for a club picnic, as this usually takes the place of our normal September meeting. Everyone is also welcome and encouraged to attend the eating meeting at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:00 to 5:30 P.M. Several members of the club like to get together for dinner there before the meeting. Come inside and look for us there.

    Greeting Everyone,

    I hope everyone is doing well with the raising temperatures. Hopefully soon we will get a little bit of rain to cool things down, at least for a little bit. I do know that to the north and south have been getting a little rain. Speaking of weather, there is nothing to report with WARN. This past month has been pretty quiet. I wish I could say the same for the folks in Texas. If you have been following the news, thousands of people have had to flee their homes do to raising flood waters. It has gotten to the point that the FCC made the following statement this past Friday:

    General Communications Emergency Declared (Jul 5, 2002) — Under the authority of Section 97.401 of the Federal Communications Commission’s Rules and Regulations [47 C.F.R. Part 97] a general communications emergency is declared to exist in Texas requiring the protection of amateur emergency communication frequencies. Amateurs are required to refrain from using 7285 [daytime], and 3873 [night time] plus or minus 3 KHz unless they are taking part in the handling of emergency traffic. This order is effective immediately until rescinded but may be as long as 72 hours.”

    This may be over today, 7/8/02, but on the other hand it could be extended. For those are working HF and work in the above frequencies make sure that you stay aware of the conditions.

    Field Day I understand was a pretty good time. My niece decided to have a baby that weekend, so my priorities ended up elsewhere. I did tell my niece that she needs to have better planning next time. I do have priorities J. Anyway, the fellowship is always good with our Field Days and that is the best. Someone did make the mention that sometime we ought to really go to work and see how many contacts we can actually make in that 24 hour period. I agree and think it would be fun and some work to see how well we can do by taking Field Day to work. Just once would be fine. I kind of like what we do. Make some contacts and have a good time.

    This month’s report for me is a little shorter than normal, but that is not a bad thing.

    There is discussion of what callsign to use for the Field Day operation. A motion is made by Erin to use KØUHF, Nadine’s callsign. Motion is approved by a vote of members present. There is mention of asking Myron, WØPBV to make a PR announcement about Field Day on radio KMAN.

    Francis, WØEVJ, announces an upcoming balloon launch on July 6 by Lloyd, KD4STH.

    Brian announces that our annual MAARS picnic will probably be sometime in September.

    The meeting is closed at about 9:00 P.M. with 18 members present.

    Hello to everyone and I hope you have enjoyed all the wonderfully nice weather we have had lately. We’ve had some rain with few thunderstorms of any dangerous nature and lots of very moderate weather. Those who are members of WARN I’m sure wish for a little more severity to the weather, but mother nature hasn’t seemed to oblige us.

    June 14th will be the next meeting of MAARS, and final discussions and suggestions for Field Day will be our main topic. To bring you up to speed if you haven’t overheard, we currently plan to run as a Class 1A station. This means that we will have one HF rig for operators as well as what is now called a GOTA or “Get On The Air” station. This station by ARRL standards is meant to be a station for those who don’t have HF privileges as well as those who have not been active in radio for some time even if they do hold a license for HF.

    KCØLKZ is in the process of working on both the club generator as well as a mounting bracket for the club’s HF antenna. We plan on mounting the HF antenna in a bucket truck provided by NØYHJ and COX Communications. We will also run a dipole antenna provided by KAØSWM and a Butternut offered by KD7GBG.

    There are still plenty of options available for operating modes and VHF/UHF. If you have some input and think you can make it to Field Day, please feel free to attend the meeting and share your input. For those that aren’t aware the location for the event will be Tuttle Creek State Park. The shelter location is the first turn to the left after coming around the tubes from the west. The MAARS repeater will be monitored for all who are interested and we can guide you in if need be. Keep in mind if you don’t want to be on the air, Field Day is an excellent chance to get together with the group and just say hello to old friends as well as make new.

    Now down to serious business. Over the years MAARS membership, as with any group or club, has been up and down. Currently we are at a lower point in membership and participation. During a recent discussion it was mentioned that if something ‘catastrophic’ happened to the repeater that was not ‘disaster’ oriented, “meaning the repeater just wears out,” our current funds could not replace it. What I hate about this myself is that we offer some really nice options out there for amateur radio operators in the area. Currently we have people who use the repeater very little and offer a lot of dedication and time/money/resources to the club, then a group who use the repeater who offer all the above, and last there is a group out there who use the repeater and its functions with absolutely no concern for the cost and upkeep of the service they use. If you use the autopatch more than once a month for personal use and aren’t a member of MAARS or at least donate money to the repeater, then I’d suggest you purchase a cell phone. This opinion is strictly mine and not something the club has requested me to say. I just feel like it should be said.

    Another topic that affects us all is programs for club meetings. We all need to think of subjects that we would like to see. Our topics don’t always have to be oriented to amateur radio, however it would be nice if we stay in that realm overall. When I decided to offer my time as president a couple of years ago, I did so knowing that it would be a challenge for me personally. I’m a basically shy and quiet person and felt it was a good opportunity to work on these areas. It seems I’m a little braver than most as when asked for opinions most people are very quiet out there. As far as programs go, we’ve had some excellent programs offered from time to time by different people. If you have a topic you think people are interested in please offer that to the club officers. If you have something you’d like to know more about, again ask the officers about it, or even better yet educate yourself on the subject and share it with the club.

    Ok, I’ll get off my soapbox now and tell you that I really do enjoy hearing you on the air. Even more so I enjoy talking to you all and sharing our interests and what not when we get together. For a great chance to do this join us at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:00 t o 5:30 on Friday the 14th before our club meeting. All members, guests, spouses and such are more than welcome to join us both for supper and the meeting. As usual the meeting will be at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Ave. in Manhattan, KS. I hope you’ll be there.

    Well, it is time to gear up and get serious about Field Day. This year MAARS will have Field Day at Shelter #4 at Tuttle Creek River Pond Area. This shelter is located next to the Spillway. Unfortunately, I have not been able to attend the Field Day Committee meetings, but I am sure that the folks that did attend have things online and are ready to go. As always, Field Day is a great day where hams can get together and operate and/or just hang out with friends. No matter what your reason is to attend Field Day, make sure you come out and bring some non hams. See you there.

    WARN has been pretty quiet this last month. If my opinion meant anything, I would have the opinion that our severe weather season is basically over. I am sure that we will see more thunderstorms, but our frequency of severe weather callouts will be few and far between. I do always leave room for doubt. As we all know that living in the great state of Kansas the weather can change fast and without notice.

    This last Saturday, some of the WARN members went on a tour of the southern posts. We re-evaluated each post for its validity for being a good post. We did eliminate a couple of posts and changed a couple to new and better locations. Nothing drastic though. At June’s WARN meeting we will be renumbering posts, so they make a little bit better sense and help make them easier to find. Our next WARN meeting will be June 11th, 7 P.M. at the Riley County Emergency Management Office at 115 N 4th St. Stop by and see us some time. Have fun with your summer activities and be safe.

    There is discussion about the MAARS beam antenna that needs to be repaired for Field Day. Field Day 2002 starts at 1800 UTC (1 P.M. local time) on Saturday, June 22 and runs through 2100 UTC June 23. This year DX stations in north and South America are invited to participate in FD.

    I’ll keep things really short this month.

    Currently MAARS members are in the process of making plans for Field Day. On May 3, several members got together and checked out the club’s HF antenna and decided what we will need in order to operate using this antenna. Some other discussion of Field Day took place as well. The old Novice station that used to be allowed during Field Day is now replaced with GOTA or “Get On The Air” station. This station is intended for hams who have not been active in Amateur radio and for persons who are not licensed. Of course there must be a control operator in this case. We still have some discussion left and need to decide on several things. I hope this will bring those of you interested in Field Day in.

    As usual our normal club meeting will be held the second Friday of the month, which will be May 10, at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross Building in Manhattan, KS. 2601 Anderson.

    All members and guests are also welcome to join us for dinner at Sirloin Stockade around 5:00 to 5:30 P.M. We usually try to sit toward the southwest corner of the building. I hope to see you there.

    Hello Everyone,

    It looks like April and May have been a little wet. That is good for the plants and our lawns. I know that I have had to cut mine almost twice a week just to keep it down. With all of the rain we have been getting, it may be time to start looking for a little bit of flooding. I am sure the ground is getting saturated.

    Last month some of the WARN members traveled down to Wichita to visit the Severe Weather Expo at the Kansas Coliseum. We thought this would have been a huge Expo. Unfortunately, it was not. There were a few booths there that did have some good information, but there was not a lot there and not that many visitors. It is my opinion that the Home Safe Expo that we had in Manhattan was a huge success, much better than the Wichita Expo. We did have a good time together.

    With all of the thunderstorms that we have been getting, I would like to remind everyone about lightning safety. Make sure that your antennas and radios are grounded. I like to disconnect my antennas from my radios and I like to shut down my computer. If you shut down your computer, remember to disconnect your telephone or modem line. Electricity can and will travel through the telephone line and zap your computer. Of course try not to use corded phones, wash dishes, take showers or baths, or use electrical appliances during thunderstorms. Even though most thunderstorms are not severe, lightning does accompany all thunderstorms. Please be cautious and safe.

    Well, I cannot find anything else of interest to inform you except WARN has been pretty active. As of right now we just went into another tornado watch. So, it is time to do my duty. Have fun and please be safe during our severe weather season.

    Unfortunately, due to problems at work I was unable to make most of the March meeting. I thank those who attended and the officers who continued the meeting without my presence.

    Field Day was discussed at the meeting and a location was picked. Field Day is one week prior to the Country Stampede this year, and that allowed a broader choice of locations. Many locations were discussed and the most favorable was below the tubes at Tuttle Creek Lake. We will still need to decide how many radios we will want to operate for the event and the use of call signs. Many years we have used Nadine’s call sign of KØUHF as it seems to attract people’s attention. We have also used the repeater/club call sign of KSØMAN. There have been some complaints for it as people tend to think it is ???. Your thoughts and ideas will be welcomed at the meeting.

    The reason I did not make the March meeting until late was due to problems at work. I work at the Manhattan Mercury, and we had troubles with the controller for our printing press. The reason I bring this up is because I had a new experience while trying to solve the problem. While trying to troubleshoot the unit which caused our press to be inoperational, the gentleman on the phone requested we short across two terminals in the unit. He mentioned them by number and as we had measured the voltage there earlier, we double checked his suggestion. When the electrician I was working with stuck his needle nose pliers across the two terminals there was an immediate explosion of light and sparks. 480 volts can be quite violent. To make a long story short, the same numbers were used in two different places in this cabinet and were on different circuits. The end results were that we learned a bit about safety and maybe double checking isn’t always enough.

    Our normal club meeting will be held April 12, at the American Red Cross Building, 2601 Anderson in Manhattan. All members and guests are welcome to attend the meeting, which starts at 7:30 P.M. Members of the club also gather for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan between 5:00 and 5:30 P.M. We welcome all members and guests for dinner as well. I hope to see you all then.

    Happy spring to everyone!

    I am so excited that the cold if finally and hopefully over. Now we can get outside with those new antenna projects, and of course do our annual spring cleaning.

    With the mild winter we had there was time to do some of that. Other than working on our fantastic hobby, it is also time to re-seed the yards, plant gardens, and basically just enjoy the out-of-doors.

    I am excited about the test session coming up on the 20th of April. We have a couple of folks that should be testing and when they pass their test, they will be WARN members and we will introduce them to MAARS and hopefully they will help increase our membership. I do enjoy watching the number of hams growing in this area. In the past few months the repeater has stayed pretty warm with conversations. Henry, KAØSWM may have to install a fan to help keep it cool.

    WARN has been active this past month not with callouts for severe weather, but with providing public education. Laurie, KCØKTY, Mike, NØPVU, John, NØPVT and I have been conducting classes to different organizations and businesses in Riley County. We have had several classes each week. Mike and I are also conducting classes to a few groups on Ft. Riley. We also trying to get spotters in Geary County to join WARN. We have had such a increase in the request for classes that we may need to get a couple more people to attend a Weather Service Train the Trainer class so we can have more people able to give classes if we have a big influx again next year.

    On April 13th there is a Severe Weather Expo at the Kansas Coliseum in Wichita. This is an all-day event and everyone is invited to attend. There will be different classes throughout the day along with plenty of vendors to sell their wears. Not all of the classes are weather related, so if you’re not interested in the weather there will be something that you may learn. We have about 4 to 6 people making plans to go down to this event. So, if you don’t have anything planned, make plans to come on down. The more the merrier.

    I think that is about all I have for this month, so enjoy the warm weather and we’ll see you on the repeater.

    The MAARS meeting for 3-8-2002 began at 7:30 P.M , opened by Vice-President Bob, KBØZWK.

    There was a discussion about participating in the Manhatttan HOME Exposition Event. It was voted not to participate.

    The next topic of discussion was selecting a site for the coming Field Day, which will be on June 22 & 23 this year. Some of the possible sites considered were: Stueve residence, Pottwatomie state lake #2, City Park, Cico Park, Warner Park and the Tuttle Creek Park area. The Tuttle Creek Park area was selected by vote of the members present.

    There were announcements of upcoming events of interest to MAARS & WARN members, including weather poster judging on April 1, and tornado watch training meeting on Saturday, April 13.

    There were 11 people in attendance at the meeting. The meeting was closed at about 9:30 P.M.

    In February, we were treated to a presentation by Mike Moore (NØPVU), showing video and giving us a talk about his trip to Australia last fall. Mike obviously enjoyed the trip and those attending the meeting enjoyed hearing about it. We also gave away door prizes for persons answering a question about amateur radio operating procedures. The question was “Can music ever be transmitted over amateur radio legally? Be specific, simple yes or no answers do not count.” The answer is that music may actually be transmitted or actually “retransmitted” during only one situation and that is the retransmission of space shuttle missions. Mission Control uses music to wake the astronauts. Two people got correct answers and received $5 gift certificates to Radio Shack. Many very good and interesting answers were given.

    On February 16th a test session was held at the Red Cross with MAARS as the sponsor. 10 people showed up for testing. 8 students from the KSU solar car team passed the technician test as well as another local youth. Another attendee passed the written general class test on their way to upgrading to a general license. The next scheduled test session will be at 1:30 P.M. on April 20th at the Red Cross building, 2601 Anderson Avenue, Manhattan, KS. Thank you to Francis Sable (WØEVJ), Greg Cerny (WQØP), and John Blessing (NØYRL) for their assistance with the test session, their help made it go off without a hitch.

    Our March meeting will be held on March the 8th at 7:30P.M. at the Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Ave. We should start thinking about Field Day locations so they can be reserved if need be and plans can be made. This year for the first time Field Day and the Country Stampede are ‘not’ on the same weekend, Field Day comes the week before. This might open up some other possibilities as to locations to hold the event. I’ve heard a couple of ideas already from people so feel free to throw your idea in as well.

    I plan to provide some information on some ‘newer’ operating methods as well during the meeting. I’ve received an e-mail or two on different things that are being done and hope to present some of the information.

    As always we will meet before the regular meeting for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan. We usually meet there between 5:00 and 5:30 P.M. Anyone with an interest in amateur radio is welcome to attend and members are encouraged to bring guests. Hope to see you then.

    As we enter the third month of 2002, I have to say that we have experienced a pretty nice winter. To date, we only had three snow falls that actually left the snow white for a couple of days. I know that I am ready for spring and the nice warm days that lay ahead. At last months officer’s meeting, Brian thought it may be a good idea if I were to get my Volunteer Examiner Certification. Well, I followed through with his suggestion and as of the March 2nd I am now a new VE. I think that this is a good move. I believe that helping with the education and testing process of new and potential amateur radio operators keeps our local organizations a repeaters active and on the air. I do applaud those who make a point to talk up amateur radio and keep the repeater warm with communications. We did experience a slow term within the past year, but I have noticed more activity on the repeater recently. The numbers that have been checking into the nets are on the rise as well.

    I feel good about MAARS and W.A.R.N and I believe the activities and attendance is on the increase. Thanks to everyone for their participation. In the world of W.A.R.N everything is quiet as far as tornadic activity. However, some of us did keep our eyes on the computer screens and radars as this last snow storm threatened our area. Hopefully this will be the last of the snow.

    In February Mr. Leonard Humes, a meteorologist from Ft. Riley, spoke at our WARN meeting. His presentation was about indicators of severe weather. This was a very interesting class. If you missed it, Mike (NØPVU) was gracious enough to video record it and it is now part of the video library at emergency management if you would like to view it.

    Upcoming events- The Topeka National Weather Service will be presenting its Basic Spotter Course. This will be held at the Manhattan Fire Dept at 2000 Denison Ave. This will be on March 13th at 7 P.M. You do not have to be a W.A.R.N member to attend. I encourage everyone to attend. This is a very informative presentation and could help save lives in the event of tornadic severe weather. W.A.R.N members, remember this will take the place of our regular meeting for March and this class is required under the new training standards if you have not had it yet.

    Myron,WØPBV, discussed the condition of the Riley County communications bus which is being renovated for that purpose and as a command center. Myron also passed out forms to be filled out to be registered for emergency operations.

    Henry, KAØSWM, announced that our repeater callsign will be in the new state repeater directory. The meeting was closed at about 9:30 P.M. by Brian.

    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

    I hope everyone has enjoyed the wide variety of weather we have had since our last meeting. It seems like we finally got a little bit of winter weather. For our January meeting we were able to auction a lot of donated “stuff” and raise some money for the club. Thanks to Greg Cerny (WQØP) for helping by acting as an auctioneer and also to all who donated and purchased items. For February, as requested by several members, Mike Moore (NØPVU) will be presenting us with a short talk about his trip to Australia this past fall. I know Mike had a wonderful time on his trip and I am looking forward to hearing him discuss it further.

    MAARS will also be holding a test session February 16 at 1:30 P.M. at the Red Cross Building 2601 Anderson, testing will be available for levels up to and including General. If you are interested in testing for Extra Class, check with us to see if that will be available or not. You can reach me by telephone at 785-587-8617, or by e-mail at brianc@kscable.com.

    We need people to volunteer for the various committees we have, including Field Day, Repeater, Picnic/Christmas Party. We have had a couple of people express interests in some committees but need more. It would also be great if we could have some different ideas for meeting topics, I’m sure if you are interested in the topic there are probably others who are interested as well. The February meeting will be held on February 8th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross located at 2601 Anderson in Manhattan, KS. All members and guests are welcome to attend and are also invited to join us for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan, KS. at around 5:00 to 5:30 P.M.

    VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT

    I think that 2002 is starting off very well. Our January club meeting was excellent. If you missed the meeting, you missed a super fun time. We held an auction. Yes, we raised a little money for the club, but more important we had a fun time just being together. I did have to leave before the auction was over however I do understand that basically everything went out the door. I wonder how much of that stuff we will see at next year’s auction. I guess we will find out when we do our annual cleanings of our shacks.

    The January WARN meeting had a good start as well. We had about 10 members for the first meeting. During the meeting we reviewed the some of the policies and procedures. If you are a WARN member and you missed the meeting, just review your policies and procedures and you will be fine. If you need a copy contact me and I will send you a copy.

    Our next meeting will be exciting. We will meet at the Riley County Police Dept. at 7 P.M. on February 12th. We will look at the changes in the EOC and quickly review the policies concerning the EOC. Then we have a special treat. We have a guest speaker. Mr. Leonard Humes will be joining us for the evening. Mr. Humes is a weather forecaster for Ft. Riley and he is a meteorology instructor at Cloud County Community College. He will provide us with information about indicators of severe weather. He has some excellent visual aids. Make plans to attend.

    I am working on coordinating some ARES/RACES training for the club. I feel this is very important in case of a disaster. I will be getting with Myron WØPBV to help with this task. I would like to have this type of training a couple times a year, just in case. As always Myron and I are always looking for new members for ARES/RACES. If you would like to be added to the list and help out, let Myron or I know and we will get you on your way.

    If you are interested here are some nets that are active here in Kansas. I try to check into the Kansas Weather Net and the Single Sideband Net as much as I can. Anyone is welcome to check in.

    The January 11, 2002 meeting was opened by Brian, KCØDWX, at 7:30 P.M. The main activity of the meeting was the auction of various items of equipment which been donated by Norm, NØJCC, Chuck Carter, AAØRI and others.The auctioneers were Brian and Greg Cerny, NQØP. The bidding for some items was very competitive. The receipts from the auction went into the MAARS bank account. The meeting was closed at about 9:30 P.M.

    Attendance was good, with 19 persons present.

    Happy New Year to everyone. It seems like the past year has gone very quickly. I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and ended up with everything you wanted. MAARS met in December at the home of Fred and Nadine Stueve for the our annual Christmas party. Turkey, ham and beverages were provided and everyone brought along a dish to share, as well as gifts for the gift exchange. It was great having the new hams there as well. James Glasgow (KCØLKW), Andrew Fassbender (KCØLUE), and Gregory Cerny, Jr. (KCØLUF) all youth hams who obtained their licenses in the past few months as well as Frank Gose (KCØLUG) a new ham as well. It was great having these people new to the hobby join us, as well as all who attended.

    MAARS will be holding testing sessions every other month starting in February if all goes well. We will go with the 3rd Saturday of the month and the time is yet to be announced. We will also be discussing having classes for people that might want to take them in order to become an amateur radio operator.

    Our January meeting will be held the second Friday of the month, January 11th, at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson. For the meeting we will have an auction of some things that have been collecting at various locations and mostly coming from Norm and Phyllis Dillman during their recent move. We will try to limit the number of items in order to keep the meeting from being too long. More items may be auctioned off at another meeting.

    The club has various committees which we will discuss during the meeting as well, I hope we can get a better turn out for people to sign up for these committees then we have in some past years. Some of the committees that we have had in the past are: Repeater, Field Day, RFI, and Christmas Party/Picnic. I would suggest that once people sign up for these committees they get together and decide on a ‘captain’ in order to keep order. This person can help keep things in line and make the final decision where there are differences of opinion. Don’t be afraid of it due to that. This might be an excellent opportunity to get some of the newer hams in the area into participating and learning more about radio and working together as a team.

    Anyone who has ideas for meeting topics they would like to see or think they would like to demonstrate please contact one of the officers and let them know. Sometimes one of the best ways to learn more about something is to try and teach people about the subject. I’m sure there are several people who would volunteer to help you in getting the information needed.

    As usual before our normal club meeting we will meet at the Sirloin Stockade for all who are interested. We usually meet between 5:00 and 5:30 and have a good meal. All members and guests are welcome.

    VICE-PRESIDENT’S REPORT

    This is the first time I have put anything into the MAARS Newsletter. Brain, KCØDWX asked if I would start putting information in the newsletter about WARN and other related items. Of course, I am more than happy to. However, I would first like to thank everyone that voted me back for a third term as vice-president. It is surely a pleasure for me to serve for such a fine group of friendly amateur operators. I have heard other hams come on our repeater and express their pleasure of being able to talk to friendly people here. That makes me proud to be a member of the MAARS club and the repeater.

    WARN had its last meeting of the year in November. The members came up with some new training standards. The standards are for the continued education and safety of our spotters. WARN members are being notified of the new standards and they will be implemented starting in 2002. We have also obtained a list of Stationary Spotters in Riley County from the Topeka National Weather Service. We have invited those folks to train with us. They shall serve as stationary observers in areas where we may not have spotters. Guidelines have been implemented for their operation and safety. Some of them have expressed interest in obtaining their ham license. One individual, Dominic Torres, KCØLKZ is one of our stationary folks that have passed his Technician class test. Congratulations Dominic!

    I would like to extend an open invitation to everyone to stop in at a WARN meeting and see what we are up to. Of course, we are always looking for more spotters, but we are not the pushy kind. Our meetings will start again in January on the second Tuesday at the Riley County Emergency Management Office, 115 N. 4th St. Yawl come and see now, here?

    I hope that everyone is having a nice holiday season. As promised, here is a tentative training schedule for the 2002 season. We normally have a tour of posts. That will be scheduled on a weekend during the warmer months for those who would like to participate. Those that do attend a post tour will be counted for a session of training. As you can see, October and November are open for suggestions. If there is something you would like to do, just say the word.

    I will not be available for all of the meetings due to my work schedule, but I will try. As we move forward I will advise which meetings pose conflict. If I cannot make them, I would like someone to give the training when needed. I will pass that information so there is time to prepare. January is a conflict, but I’m working on it. I feel confident that we will have a good year. Hope to see all of you soon.

    Brian, KCØDWX,opened the meeting at 7:30 P.M. for our 11-9-2001 meeting. The list of nominees for MAARS officers is named. No additional nominees are received from the floor of the meeting. A show of hands vote is held and the list of nominees is voted in unanimously by those present. The one office that changes is that of treasurer. The new treasurer is Erin Crouch, KBØTXL, to replace Nadine,KØUHF, who has done the treasurer’s duties for several years. A big thank you to Nadine for all the time and effort she has devoted to MAARS.

    There follows discussion about the annual Christmas party-meeting which is scheduled to be held at Nadine and Fred Stueve’s residence on 12-8-2001 starting at 6:30 P.M.

    Fred, KØTCS, read a report from a local newspaper column of 50 years ago about WØEVJ, and others going into military service in 1951.
