    It seems that spring is upon us, and with the warmer weather teasing us out of our caves, I hope we have a great year coming for us. There seems to be a great deal of interest in amateur radio on many levels, and it is up to us to make sure we are there for the calling.

    Last year in March we proved ourselves to the organizers of the Cabin Fever Challenge Bike Ride as valuable communications, capable of doing what cell phones couldn’t. By the end of that ride they wanted us back, even though they went into it somewhat skeptical.

    We then worked a bike ride for CASA in Manhattan, and then back to another ride in Pott. county for the organizers of Cabin Fever. The short story is Cabin Fever is coming up on March 28th, and we plan on wowing the group this year, even more than last year.

    Sylvia (KCØYJO) will be speaking a bit at the Friday MAARS meeting about this upcoming bike ride, and sharing the maps for the bike ride with the club. This year’s course seems a bit more challenging for us to cover but I’m sure we will do well.

    It also seems we may have another group interested in having us help out with bike rides on a regular basis, and Myron (WØPBV) will share info he has with us at the meeting.

    On March 8th MAARS held a test session where 14 applicants were tested for either new licenses or upgrades. We had several KSU students there, as well as Gordon (KBØYYO, upgrade), Laura (new license), Lawrence (WØLKC), and Sylvia (KCØYJO, upgrade) just from the top of my head membership. I also believe we will gain a couple of new members from our test session, and look forward to seeing them at the meetings.

    With more and more new membership, I look for all of you to bring up meeting topics that might interest these new hams. While some of us may have seen a J-Pole and built one several times, it is a great opporturnity to share that knowledge with the new people out there.

    We also hope to have some new things in reference to our interference problem to share at the meeting. For information on that, please be there.

    I will remind you all that we usually have dinner around 5:30-ish at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan, we then meet at the Red Cross in Manhattan at 7:30 for our meeting. We hope to see you all there.

    Hello to all and I hope you have enjoyed some of the nice warm weather we have had over the past week or two. I apologize for the lack of a formal newsletter, but I’m behind in info to include and want to make sure you know of a couple of very important pieces of information as soon as possible.

    First big thing for this month is our meeting location. Due to that fact that there is a major remodeling project occurring at our normal meeting location of the Red Cross, we needed to find a different location for this month’s meeting. We have been given permission to hold our meeting at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue in Manhattan. Anyone needing help finding this location, please let me know I will try to help you out as well you should feel free to get on the repeater on your way to the meeting and ask for help. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it is beyond our control.

    Next we need very badly to get a feel for the number of people who can help out with communications for the Cabin Fever Bike Ride on Saturday, March 28 in Pott. County. We made an excellent impression on this organizers of the bike ride, as well as the Manhattan bike ride last year, and need to continue our support or fail horribly at what we claim we as hams can do. Please contact Sylvia (KCØYJO) at the meeting or on the nets, and let her know if you will help with this ride. It is far better to have too many people than not quite enough. APRS capabilities and such might be a nice addition to last year’s bike rides for those that can help in those ways.

    I intend to give a short (you can all hope) talk on solar power as a possibility for your personal stations, and give you a few beginner tips. I will be covering with some limited knowledge, batteries, charging, commercially available solar panels and lighting possibilities. I will try to bring along a couple of photos, as well as examples of low voltage lighting that might be useful.

    MAARS will meet for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 for conversation and dinner. After the meeting will move to the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue in Manhattan, for our regular club meeting to begin at 7:30 P.M. I hope to see many of you there.

    I’d like to start off by apologizing for not having a ‘real’ newsletter for January, and then for it being so late. I hope you everyone out there has had a good holiday season, as well as a good start to the ‘New Year.’

    There area a couple of things that must be said, even if in an informal newsletter. First, thank you to Victor and his family for hosting our Christmas party this year. Those of us who made it had a great time and enjoyed the quality company we had to share the evening.

    Next, I’d like to congratulate the officers for the coming year. The officers for 2009 are Scott Chainey, ACØCY, Vice President; Christine Chainey, KCØYJN, Treasurer; Francis Sable, WØEVJ, Secretary; and myself, Brian Carter, President. Everyone I’ve worked with in the MAARS club has been a pleasure, and I’d like to thank Dave, KDØAZG for his help with MAARS in the past year, and wish him well with his co-WARN coordination with Mark, KCØQAS.

    Our first meeting will be January 9th at 7:30 P.M., and will be a quick get together with ideas and suggestions for the following year. We should think of ideas for getting more members, ideas for meeting topics, and discuss other ideas we may all have for the future. The meetling will be at the Red Cross in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson Avenue.

    We will also join for dinner at 5:30 or so at Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan for dinner and conversation.

    I’d like to start off by thanking John, NØPVT, for his program last month, “Spies, Espionage and Clandestine Radio.” I’m sorry I was unable to attend, but I heard several people say they enjoyed the program.

    As we come to the end of another year, it is once again time for the election of officers. I would like to thank all those who served on an office over the past year. I’ve enjoyed working with everyone. We have also had a lot of increase in radio communications for events with our bike rides, and I’d like to thank all those that helped in any way on those rides, as well. We have already been asked to help with the rides next year, and we are working at incorporating APRS into these rides.

    Also, with the end of the year, it is time for members to renew their memberships with MAARS. These memberships pay for the bills and maintenance on the repeater and such, and we value everyone’s help with this. I will include a list of members as of November 3. If you feel you should be on this list, let us know and we will make sure it is up-to-date. This is intended mainly as a reminder for those who may have forgotten, as well as a cross check to those we may have missed.

    We will also be discussing plans for the annual Christmas Party for MAARS, our volunteer committee will be discussing what plans they have come up with, and looking for the group’s approval as well as further input. Thank you, Christine, for stepping up and running with Christmas party planning.

    If anyone has a short program they are interested in presenting at this month’s – or any other month’s – meeting, please let me know. I have some plans for future meetings, but it is nice to get ideas from several sources, and it helps to keep everyone interested.

    As usual we will join for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M., and then move on to the meeting at the Red Cross, 2601 Anderson Ave to start at 7:30 P.M.

    Let me first say I apologize for both the late newsletter as well as the text only format. It has been a busy week, and I didn’t have a lot of things to include not did I really set time aside to get it all done.

    On that note, Sylvia and I will be celebrating our 4th anniversary, along with Ian as he wouldn’t be here without us, so we will not make the October meeting for MAARS.

    There are a few things that you should all look forward to. First John (NØPVT) will be giving the program for the evening on “Spies, Espionage and Clandestine Radio.” I think this will be an interesting program, and there should be at least some information for everyone.

    Next, hopefully there will be some discussion as to the location and date of the (normally) annual Christmas party. We’ve missed the last couple of years due to circumstances beyond our control, so we hope we can fit one in this year. In the past this event has been on a Saturday night, with good food and company as well as a gift exchange.

    Also there should be some discussion on this past weekend’s bike ride that we performed communications for. I think it was a great success and Sylvia (KCØYJO) put in a lot of work ahead of time with the sponsor to make sure they were comfortable with knowing what was going on. I’d like to thank all who helped either in person or by donation of equipment.

    I’m sure you all heard the repeater is noisy again. As our problem has returned, we will be working to solve the issue. I appreciate your patience while we work on this, and apologize for the noise that comes through. If need be we will switch to the lower antenna again to keep things a bit quieter.

    Last, November is the annual election of officers. I hope we can get a person or persons to volunteer for the nominating committee. This person should decide who is well suited for a position, be it current officers or new candidates, and make sure they are interested in serving in that position. Any person wishing to run for an office or vote in the annual elections needs to have their dues paid by the end of October 2008.

    As usual the group will meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30, and then move the the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson Ave in Manhattan for the normal meeting.

    Hello to everyone. Hopefully you all have stayed cool through the really hot weather and are now enjoying a slight cool down.

    You’ll notice in this month’s newsletter and no doubt heard on the net a couple weeks back of the Dillmans passing through town and inviting everyone to join them for lunch. This brought back a lot of fond memories of listening to our repeater get a decent work out.

    I’m going to point something out that I know I am at fault in now-a-days in reference to amateur radio.

    Many times I hear a station ID only to sit and listen to total silence afterwards. I have even thought, ‘Wow, nobody called them back,” of course I was too busy to pick up the mic and say hello myself.

    Let’s consider what you mean when one says they are ‘mobile’ or ‘monitoring,’ that usually means, “Hey I’m out here and would love to chat with someone.” Phyllis and Norm were the type of people who would never let an ID be followed by silence. If they heard a station ID, they made sure they knew they were welcome friends.

    So, I personally vow to do a better job of listening and talking on the radio. If I hear you ID, I’ll say hello. I might not talk for long but I will open up the door for others to possibly join in.

    I’m not trying to point a finger at anybody, but just note that I recall a time when you would occasionally turn the radio down so you could actually follow what was going on elsewhere.

    I also have to acknowledge that we have made great improvements in the last couple of years. We have many great new hams with new ideas and interests, and we should do our best to challenge them as well as ourselves to keep things active and exciting for all.

    Join us Friday for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade 5:30 ish, and for our meeting at 7:30 at the American Red Cross in Manhattan.

    Last month we discussed Field Day and decided on Pott. Co. State Lake #2.

    We will need to make some final plans and decide what we would like to do at Field Day this year. Anyone who is interested in helping organize this event and make plans, please jump up and join in.

    I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the CASA bike ride in May. It was a huge success, as we were able to pass on ‘way more information’ then what the organizers had hoped for. I know there were a few bikes brought back by our group and a couple of minor injuries. One thing we didn’t have was a first aid kit at the central command/Start, stop point for the race. Something we will have to keep in mind next time.

    It seems like we may be having another test session coming up on June 22. This hasn’t been finalized but there is some interest in an afternoon test session, so if you know someone who wants to test, let them know.

    I’d like to thank the WARN members who were out during the recent hail storm, there were some casualties as Rudy, KDØBLT, managed to loose several windows on his car and Dave, KDØAZG, reporting from his job near the Airport, lost most of his car. Thank you to all the WARN members out there.

    Our meeting will be on June 13th at 7:30 P.M., and as usual we will have a get together at Sirloin Stockade around 5:30 P.M. for dinner and conversation.

    Sylvia, KCØYJO, gave details about the bicycle-ride event scheduled tomorrow (May 10th) and passed out a mileage and support-site chart.

    Francis, WØEVJ, presented a lecture and demonstration on an easier way to remember and use electrical formulae.

    Brian, KCØDWX, discussed details about the ongoing repeater interference.

    Mike, NØPVU, made a motion to reimburse Tim Sobering, KCØGBG, for filters for the repeater. Myron, WØPBV, seconded the motion. The members present vote affirmatively.

    There was discussion to choose a site for the coming Field Day. The selection was first narrowed to three possible sites, Pottawatomie Lake 1, Pottawatomie Lake 2, or Stueves’ residence. It was decided to select Pottawatomie 2.

    There will be a sale at Chaineys’ location in Wamego on May 31, to coordinate with the Citywide sale on that date.

    Seventeen members were in attendance at the meeting. There was an ARRLsponsored license exam on Sunday, June 1, at the Red-Cross building. There were five applicants and all five passed the exam. VEs administering the exam were, Brian, KCØDWX, Greg, WQØP, Scott, ACØCY, and Francis, WØEVJ.

    I’ll keep this fairly short and sweet this month. As you know, the repeater has been much quieter but our range is greatly decreased. We are still working on this problem, and hope to make more progress in the near future. A meeting with all entities that are involved at the KSDB tower occurred on May 7th, and a couple of more ideas were brought to attention.

    May 10th will be the CASA bike ride. We will be sharing final plans at the meeting Friday night, and encourage anyone who is interested in helping to do so. I do recommend you have at least a mobile radio capable of 50 watts and an external 5/8-wave antenna as we have decreased coverage with the repeater.

    I believe Francis will also be giving us a brief program on memorizing formulas for your ham exam.

    I also want to thank John for last month’s grab and go bag program.

    Please join us at the monthly MAARS meeting Friday, April 11th at 7:30 PM at the Red Cross, 2601 Anderson Ave, in Manhattan. I also invite you to join us for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade before the meeting, around 5:30 ish.

    The monthly MAARS meeting was on April 11, 2008 at the Manhattan Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Ave. MAARS President, Brian, KCØDWX presided.

    We had a presentation by John, NØPVT, on the make-up of a grab and go survival pack. He started with a multiple-pocket backpack carrier. Some of the items recommended by John to be included were: 1) knife (medium size); 2) chemical flare (to gain attention of others); 3) food: hard candy, crackers, jerky, or other kinds of foods that would not easily spoil or deteriorate; 4) toilet kit; 5) flashlight; 6) AM-FM radio (small); 7) gill net; 8) matches; 9) parachute cord; 10) tube tent; 11) poncho (plastic garbage bag will substitute); and other items of the user’s choice.

    It was announced there will be a Sunflower Casa bike ride with 6 SAGS on May 10 in the Keats-Riley area.

    There was discussion concerning the continuing interference problems with the MAARS repeater. It is expected that a next step is to temporarily erect another antenna on a pole away from the tower to see if the problem could be the tower itself, caused by a corroded joint or connection and causing intermodulation interference. Mike, WØMAF, has offered a 440 MHz repeater to MAARS possibly be used as a controller link for the repeater.

    There are plans for a possible garage sale in Wamego at the city wide sale scheduled for May 31.

    There were 14 people in attendance at the meeting.

    Welcome spring. Hopefully you will all soon be able to get outside and do all the things you have been wanting/needing to get done. I know that I tuned up an antenna this week and plan on putting it up a little bit higher in the air in the near future.

    I’d like to thank everyone who helped out in the ‘Cabin Fever Challenge’ bike ride this past month. I believe we showed a few people a bit about radio as well as showed them that there are things we can do that can’t be done as well with cell phones. I want to thank Sylvia (KCØYJO) and Co-Chairperson Scott (ACØCY) for their work in organizing our part in the event.

    I believe we brought back around a dozen or so bicycles with either multiple flat tires, or people who just weren’t up for the ride. Mike (NØPVU) even loaned a pair of gloves to one young lady as it was a bit cold during the event. She was quite thankful, and made sure to return the gloves upon her return.

    We have the opportunity to prove ourselves to another group holding a bike ride on May 10th, and I hope you will all help out with this as well.

    Dave (KDØAZG) mentioned that it might be a good idea for MAARS to purchase a tent/screen room for events such as this. It might be set up in locations where campers and such aren’t as easily acceptable.

    I would like to ask if there are any other hams in the area who would like to go in on the purchase of an APRS digipeater that could be set up at the tower site. We have a pretty good sized hole in APRS coverage for this area, and this would help to fill in coverage for this area. It would digipeat packets received from people in this area and traveling down the interstate, and hopefully they would be received locally (my house) and pumped to the internet as well. As I have a very biased interest in this and I also think the club’s funds should be used elsewhere, I’d like to get a few people to go in together and make the purchase. Basically we need a Kantronics KPC3+ TNC, a 2- meter FM radio and a power supply.

    Last, but certainly not least, John Skare (NØPVT) will be presenting this month’s meeting topic, The Grab and Go Bag. This is an area where John has spent a decent amount of time working on, and I promise his grab and go bag as well as vehicle are prepared for far more disaster-oriented events than most of us could pull together in 2 or 3 days. I hope you will join us for what John has to share, as well as I believe some ideas from Dave (KDØAZG). Please join us at the monthly MAARS meeting Friday, April 11th at 7:30 PM at the Red Cross, 2601 Anderson Ave, in Manhattan.     Our March meeting is coming up on March 14th at the Red Cross in Manhattan. We have been getting better turnouts to our meetings, and I would like to see some new meeting topics and demos during the upcoming months.

    Topics for this month’s meeting will include continued discussion on the interference. Several of us have made a couple of trips to the repeater site over the last couple of weeks and made some interesting discoveries, and we even thought we had found the problem. Upon shutting down the offending equipment our noise continued.

    We will also have discussion of the upcoming bicycle ride. Sylvia will be presenting us with that info. It is important that we make this a success and decide if we are interested in aiding with other events of this nature. IÕm aware of another bike ride here in Manhattan (Riley County), in May where I’m sure our services would be welcomed.

    It was also brought to my attention that our HF antenna on top of the Red Cross building is leaning and has lost one guy. I believe the guys for the antenna were bailing twine so it is no real surprise that it needs some attention. If we can find a couple of volunteers to spend an hour or two on this and pulling our dangling COAX back up to the roof, I would appreciate it. I plan on being at the repeater site this weekend working on the interference, so some help on the antennas would be great.

    I look forward to seeing you all at the meeting and dinner on Friday. Remember, dinner will be at 5:30 PM at Sirloin Stockade.
