    The October meeting for MAARS was our picnic held in late September. Thank you to all those that attended. We had lots of goodies and everybody got to grill something as well. An attempt was made at getting a nominating committee with Erin (KBØTXL) and Frank (KCØLUG) being the only two persons to discuss it. During the picnic it was found that all the current officers were willing to run again in their current positions.

    Our November meeting will include the election of officers. If anyone else is interested in running for an office they should let us know or attend the meeting and make themselves known. Nominations will be allowed from the floor.

    We will also need to discuss if we will be having a club Christmas party and pick a time and location. We may also have a guest speaker asking for people to help with the Boy Scout Merit Badge Fair at K-State this spring.

    There will be a test session on November 19 at 8 P.M. The location will be different than usual and will be held on the KSU campus in room 274 of Rathbone Hall. We should be able to handle all tests at this session. The test fee is $12 and a photo ID is required as well as a photocopy and original of any current license or CSCE that you currently hold. While you do not need to pre-register it would be nice to have an idea of how many will be attending so please e-mail me at KCØDWX@cox.net.

    The November meeting will be held on November 14 at 7:30 P.M. at the American Red Cross building, 2601 Anderson Avenue, Manhattan. Some members also like to meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M. for dinner and conversation. Anyone is welcome to attend and need not be a member or even a licensed radio operator.

    The MAARS meeting on 9-12-2003 was opened by Brian (president) at 7:30 P.M. There was discussion on possibly doing a special event operation next year in about April or May. The hours of operation might be from Friday evening to Sunday evening. Definite plans to do this should be made by February 1. A certificate would be offered featuring the Oregon Trail.

    A VE test session is scheduled for next Saturday, 9-13-2003. Henry, (KAØSWM) announces that our repeater info has been verified with the Kansas Repeater Coordinator.

    Our meeting for November 11-14-2003 will include the annual election of MAARS Officers. Candidates may be announced from the floor at this meeting. Candidates presenting a signed written proxy statement will also be accepted if they cannot attend the meeting. This is an important meeting and all members are urged to attend.

    During the last month we have been fairly busy. I’d first like to thank all those who participated in the garage/bake sale. It was a great help and helped to raise money for a repeater fund. A special thanks goes to Fred and Donna Rose for providing such a good location for the sale.

    We also had two tables set up at the State Convention in Salina, not a lot of money was raised there but it was good to get rid of a few items that we had been collecting and didn’t want to simply throw out. Someone else can do that now.

    Our September meeting will be on the 12th and we will discuss some of the things that the Special Event Station committee has started working on. Another thing we should discuss is what we will do when we actually have the repeater fund up to a point to purchase a repeater, should be wait and hold the money until something happens or get something sooner. Also insurance will pay for things such as lightning, however the sooner you can get the cash out for the item the sooner it will be replaced, insurance could then be put back when it was received. Bring your thoughts.

    Before the meeting many of us will get together at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan for dinner and conversation. We usually gather around 5:30 for dinner, we then meet at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson for our meeting. Anyone is welcome to attend and feel free to bring a guest.

    The monthly MAARS meeting for August was on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003. MAARS president Brian, KCØDWX, conducted the meeting. There was announcement of the upcoming convention and hamfest at Salina on Sunday, Aug. 17. Several members were making plans to attend this.

    It was announced that a yard sale to benefit MAARS was planned for Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Hackerott residence.

    There was discussion of the annual picnic. It was decided that it would be at the Oregon Trail Park located east of Belvue, the same location as last year. The most likely date for the picnic will be Sept. 28 or Oct. 5 (Sunday). The exact date to be decided at the next meeting.

    Fred Stueve, KØTCS, proposes to have a Special Event Operation at some time in the future. This might be set up in the Oregon Trail Park in honor of the old Oregon Trail, which passes through that vicinity. Plans and details for this are yet to be formulated. This might be set up and operated similar to the Special Event operation at the Hollenberg Pony Express Station near Marysville, KS. by station KØASA in Aug. 27, 2000.

    There were 12 persons in attendance at this meeting.

    The August meeting for the Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society will be held on August 8. Last month we finished up a discussion of Field Day and made plans for our garage/bake sale. There was also some discussion as to holding a special event station in the future. On July 26, MAARS held a test session and had one person take a Technician test with passing results; hopefully she will be on the air soon.

    For our August meeting we will need to finalize plans for the garage and bake sale which will be held on August the 16. All money raised from the sale will go to MAARS, so if you have old stuff you need to get rid of that is sellable, we encourage you to donate it to the cause. You can also donate baked goods as well. We prefer you have items priced if you have thoughts as to what they should sell for ahead of time. Persons who are at the sale will be making deals at their discretion.

    MAARS will also be taking some of the items that did not sell at the auction we held recently to the Salina Hamfest/State convention. If you are interested in attending the Hamfest let us know and we can see what transportation is going to be available for the trip. The Hamfest is the 17th of August.

    Henry (KAØSWM) and myself recently visited the repeater site during some interference which was causing some concern to members. After checking out the repeater and later talking with Pat Collins (NØQIK), who said the county was having problems with some of their repeaters, as well as some of the long distance contacts that were being made in the same time frame, we decided most problems were caused by propagation. This does not apply to the “galloping horse sound” that is some times heard. If you do hear interference please try going on reverse and if you have a directional antenna swing it around and make notes to pass on to Henry and myself.

    While at the repeater site we also ran the repeater off battery power for 25 to 30 minutes with no problems. Battery voltages were logged in the book at the site.

    Last but not least, please feel free to join us for dinner around 5:30 on Friday before the meeting. Some members will meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan near K-Mart. Our meeting will be at 7:30 at the Red Cross at 2601 Anderson, Manhattan, KS. We hope to see you there.

    MAARS members who are also volunteer examiners (VE) held a test session on Saturday, July 26, at the Red-Cross Building. There was one applicant for a new technician license who successfully completed the exam. Amateur Radio and MAARS is to be featured in an up coming issue of the Manhattan Free Press, which is distributed locally in business places, etc. Be on the lookout for it.

    The Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society will be holding their July meeting on Friday the 11th. We will be discussing Field Day and the possibility of making some plans for a special event station sometime in the future.

    Field Day turned out well, with good participation. A mobile crank-up tower was made available by Kenny Grant (KBØRPV). The club’s beam was mounted on top and provided excellent communications. Also on the tower were lights, a United States flag, purchased for the club by Mike Moore (NØPVU), Kenny, and Frank Gose (KCØLUG). An ARRL flag was also provided by Fred and Nadine Stueve, and was flown on the tower. Electrical power was produced by Little Jeffrey. Thanks to all who participated in Field Day and helped to make it a successful event.

    Any hams and non hams are welcome to join us before the meeting on Friday for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan. Members usually eat around 5:30 P.M. Our club meeting is at 7:30 P.M. at the Manhattan Red Cross at 2601 Anderson Avenue.

    The June MAARS meeting was 6-13-2003 at the Red Cross building on Anderson Ave. Presiding was Brian, KCØDWX. There was discussion of details concerning the upcoming Field Day event. A new category of station allowed this year is ” Get-on-the-air ” station where those unlicensed persons wishing to do so could operate a Field Day station under the supervision of a licensed control operator. It was decided that we would set up this Field Day with one regular station and a “GOTA” station. Nine persons attended the meeting.

    The annual ARRL-sponsored Field day was on June 28 and 29 this year. MAARS setup for this in the Manhattan City Park in the shelter on the south side of the Park. Fred, KØTCS, supplied the generator to give us an independent power source. Kenny, KBØRPV, brought a trailer-mounted fifty-foot crank-up tower on which was mounted the MAARS tri-band beam antenna with a new American flag at the top. Mike, NØPVU, provided an HF transceiver w/power supply, an antenna tuner, a logging computer and other equipment. The “GOTA” station was set up using the MAARS Kenwood TS-820 HF transceiver, the MAARS MFJ antenna tuner and a Butternut multi-band vertical antenna. Brian, KCØDWX, transported the beam ant. and other equipment to the site, and helped assemble them. Others assisting in the setup and take down were: Nadine, KØUHF, whose callsign was used for the operation. She also supplied drinks and snacks at the site. Henry, KAØSWM, and Mike, NØPVU, provided supplies for and prepared the breakfast on Sunday morning. Frank, KCØLUG, assisted with set-up and take down of equipment. Mike, NØPVU, brought his camper trailer and stayed the night at the site. Due to the malfunction of the logging computer, we lost the logging information of our FD contacts. The weather for the event was ideal, not as hot as it usually is for Field Day. We had several out-of-town visitors at the FD site.

    Greetings to all and hope you are enjoying this cooler and calmer than usual weather that we have had. It is coming up on our June meeting which is scheduled for Friday, June 13.

    The Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society held an auction on Saturday, June the 7th at my QTH and we raised $342 for the club. With only 7 bidders attending I don’t think that is bad at all; however, many items failed to make a minimum bid. It was good to reduce some items and a few people got some really good deals. Many Heathkit items failed to meet any kind of minimum bid and will be taken to the state convention in Salina or sold on eBay.

    I’d like to thank all people who helped with the auction including and hopefully not forgetting anyone, Francis, WØEVJ; Henry, KAØSWM; Greg, WQØP; and Erin, KBØTXL. We could have done better but we certainly could have done a whole lot worse.

    I would ask that all members interested in Field Day show up at our meeting this month as we need to discuss what we will do there. We will have the rules and regs for the even available for reading and the main purpose of this meeting will be to make plans for Field Day. We also need someone to come forward and take charge of the event in order to keep some order and make sure things run smoothly. I am quite simply not available for the whole event.

    As usual several members will get together before the meeting at the Sirloin Stockade here in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M. and enjoy some conversation and good company ahead of time. I hope to see you all there and at the meeting as well.

    MAARS held an auction sale of ham equipment on Saturday, June 7 at the residence of Brian, KCØDWX . The attendance was disappointing with less than 10 bidders present. This made for little competition and good buys for those who were there. We had the able auctioneer, Greg, WQØP, of EME fame, to conduct the sale. There was a variety of items offered with some of it coming from an out-of-business 2-way radio shop and other donated equipment. We did bring in more than $300 for the MAARS treasury.

    The annual Field Day event will soon be here on June , Saturday 28 and Sunday 29, the last weekend of the month. MAARS plans to set up operation in the Manhattan city Park. Plan to attend and participate in this event.

    Field Day will be held at the Poyntz Shelter in the Manhattan city park. Field day will be on June 28th and 29th. We have reserved the shelter for all day Saturday and until noon on Sunday. This should be alright as we usually don’t operate until noon on Sunday. We will make more plans for the event during our May meeting.

    Our auction will be held on June the 7th at my house, 701 Frey Dr. here in Manhattan. We have several items that we have collected and need to sell. Various electronic items even come with the manuals.

    Our May meeting will be on May the 10th at 7:30 P.M. at 2601 Anderson Ave. All members and non-members are welcome to attend. Several members usually get together for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 PM also on that evening.

    Brian opens the MAARS meeting for April 11, 2003, at 7:30 P.M.

    Francis, WØEVJ, starts the meeting with a demonstration of antenna theory on the 2 m band using equipment, a dip oscillator, a frequency counter and several lengths of wire and tubing representing half wave length antenna elements. Differences in resonant frequency of the antenna elements were shown with differences in element length , diameter and the presence of other materials in the vicinity.

    We are planning to have a ham equipment auction sale on June 7 at Brian’s QTH in Manhattan. Some sale items will have a minimum price marked on them. If these items do not bring the minimum price amount at the auction, they will be held over to be taken to a hamfest at a later date.

    Further details of the sale will be announced later by MAARS newsletter and the MAARS repeater.

    Our March meeting was held on March 14 with a talk given by Myron Calhoun (WØPBV). Myron shared information on the grounding system he is using in his house. Thank you to Myron for sharing this information with the club.

    The April meeting for MAARS will be on April 11, 2003. Discussion for the meeting will be information about the American Cancer Society Trail ride held in June, and if we feel we can help by providing communications for the event. We will also discuss Field Day and make plans for an auction for the club.

    It looks like we will try to hold a testing session on April 26, at 1:30 PM. Listen to the weekly nets for the location of the testing session and any change in time or date.

    Remember our April meeting is the 11th at 7:30 P.M. at 2601 Anderson Ave. in Manhattan, and we will also get together for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M. I hope to see you there.

    Brian opens the MAARS meeting for March 14, 2003 at 7:30 P.M .

    Myron, WØPBV, gives a talk on grounding for lightning protection. One idea for new construction grounding protection is to connect bonding conductors to the rebar in the concrete foundation and use this for the building system. There is enough conductivity through the concrete to ground to make an effective ground, according to Myron.

    While on the subject of grounding, I recently made a measurement of the electrical capacity to ground of a vehicle. Using my standard size automobile, I measured a capacitance of about 7000 pf (.007 mf ) between chassis to ground. This was somewhat higher than I expected. On the 75m band ( 4 MHz ), this 7000 pf gives an impedance ( reactive ) of only 5.6 ohms. On the 20m ( 14 MHz ) an impedance of only 1.6 ohms. This compares to maybe 25 ohms ( resistive ) or higher of a typical ground rod. These figures indicate that a vehicle makes a very good RF ( radio frequency ) ground. Advantage could be made of this during HF portable operation. If a vehicle is parked near your operating location , connect your ground wire to the vehicle even if you are also using a ground rod for DC & AC protection. This could make a improved radiation efficiency. An idea for Field Day.

    Brian announced that the American Cancer Society has been in contact with him and is requesting communications assistance for an event scheduled for June 13,14, and 15.

    A discussion was held to decide which location to select for this year’s Field Day, to be held on June 28 & 29. The City Park was the location voted for by the members present.

    Fred, KØTCS, and Nadine, KØUHF, showed QSLs they have received from a special event operation. This was an operation from the Marconi Station at South Wellfleet, Ma. where the first transatlantic radio transmissions were made in Jan. of 1903, 100 years ago.

    The meeting was closed at about 9:00 P.M. with 11 persons in attendance.

    Last month several members of MAARS addressed and sent out newsletters as well as info for the club to over one hundred persons in the area who have not been active in our group recently. We will go over the response we received from our mailing at the March 14 meeting.

    I also mentioned getting together and sharing information for lightning safety in thinking of how to best protect your amateur radio equipment. If you have any thoughts or ideas or other information, bring this along with you to the meeting. It also time that we start to make some plans for Field Day and start to think of a location. Perhaps we can get several ideas thrown out so we can be thinking of those over the next month or so.

    For those interested in severe weather there will be a Basic Spotter Class on March the 31st at 7 P.M. at the Headquarters Fire Station in Manhattan. It is located on the corner of Kimball and Denison. This meeting is open to the general public and is a training requirement for all members of WARN.

    Remember our March meeting is the 14th at 7:30 P.M. at 2601 Anderson Ave. in Manhattan, and we will also get together for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M. I hope to see you there.

    It seems we are actually seeing a little bit of winter weather finally. Hopefully everyone one is taking advantage of a good excuse to stay indoors and do whatever work is needed indoors on the shack or at least getting in some operating time. Since spring is coming we must also start thinking of severe weather and be prepared for it as well. The Weather Amateur Radio Net is always looking for new members to help out with out storm spotting. If you have an interest please contact Bob Bartholic (KBØZWK), either on the air or at rebob@sbcglobal.net for e-mail. The requirements for being a participating member of WARN are easy to meet and fairly minimal. If you have your amateur radio license you have the hardest part tackled.

    Since WARN operates primarily on the MAARS repeater during callouts, a brief description of procedures is in order. During times when severe weather is probable and watches or warnings exist, you may hear WARN members announcing current conditions and asking for people who may be available to go out to spot on hilltops. Usually during these times, after a brief discussion, the repeater will be turned over for normal operating use when the conversation is done. Obviously, even during these announcements, all emergency traffic will take priority. If you have emergency traffic please call break and pass your emergency traffic or make the necessary contacts. The next thing you may hear WARN do is go into an actual callout. At this time the repeater, by agreement of MAARS and the trustee, go into emergency operations mode, more or less. All traffic on the repeater should be limited to members of WARN until the repeater is turned back over to normal use. Again, all emergency traffic will still be dealt with, if you come to a fire during a storm spotting event and can only report it by radio, then please call for a break and identify yourself and the emergency. As for basic weather observations from non-WARN members, while the WARN group appreciates your intent to help out, it is normally not useful and many times more harmful for you to call in and tell us that you have hail the size of a squirrel ear in a 3-block area around the Handy Shop.

    Ok, all that aside, hopefully we will have little use of the above operating procedures. As we discussed at our last meeting we will be sending this newsletter out to several amateur radio license holders in the area. We hope to contact those persons out there who have either not been with us for a while or who may not be aware we even exist. For those of you who receive this and don’t know, MAARS or The Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society, exists here in Manhattan, KS as a club of persons all interested in amateur radio and probably even more so in each other as a group of friends with a common interest. We operate locally on the KSØMAN repeater at 147.255 at +600 offset. We have meetings monthly on the second Friday of the month. For February that date is/was the 14th at 7:30 P.M. Our March meeting will be March 14th again at 7:30 P.M. The location for our meetings is the American Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS. Many of us also like to meet at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 P.M. for dinner and conversation. We would like to invite anyone interested to come and join us for either or both dinner and meeting.

    MAARS has recently started to set aside a separate fund for repeater replacement. One thing we could not do currently is write a check to purchase a repeater and replace what we have. This doesn’t sound like a problem since what we have works. However, it does sit on a radio tower on a hilltop in Kansas. Just the chances of lightning alone are enough to make one a bit nervous. Just in the last 2 or 3 years we have had to replace the phone patch board, more than likely due to lightning. Since amateur radio could and has in the past been a very useful form of communication in this area, we ask that you help support the club either by becoming a member and/or donating to the repeater fund. While there hasn’t been a need for us to help with emergency communications recently, we don’t want to find out we need it when it isn’t there.

    Our February meeting will consist of folding and stapling. We will have a very informal meeting and enjoy some conversation and refreshments while we send out this information to those who might not be aware of us.

    For March we will do a program on station and shack safety and grounding, and operating with the upcoming storm season in mind. Anyone with ideas or info on this topic please bring it to the meeting with you so we can prepare for March.

    We look forward to seeing you at dinner and the meeting, and while it is Valentine’s day, you probably couldn’t find a more loveable group of people to hang out with.

    It’s time to start a new year in amateur radio. Hopefully you all had a great holiday season and maybe with some luck you ended up with some new toys. I look forward to this next year and enjoying some activities with all of you.

    As this is a new year in MAARS, we have the following officers in office, Erin Crouch – treasurer, Francis Sable – secretary, Donna Rose Hackerott – vice-President and myself, Brian Carter – President. Personally I am going to enjoy working with these members.

    Next is to remind you all that at our next meeting we will pass around a sheet for persons wishing to sign up for committees. This is where we the officers get your help with the various events and activities or problems that we may have. Being on a committee is an excellent way to learn more about amateur radio and get to work with fellow club members. Our official January meeting will be on January the 10th at 7:30 PM. This is the second Friday of the month and for those who might be new, this is when our normal meetings are held. We will continue to hold our meeting at the Red Cross in Manhattan, at 2601 Anderson. Many members also get together for dinner on meeting nights at about 5:30 PM at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan. All members and non-members are welcome to attend both the dinner meeting and club meeting, and are encouraged to bring a guest, especially if they have an interest in amateur radio.

    I hope to see you all at the meeting and continue to hear you on our weekly club net and youth net.

    At the last MAARS meeting I was very pleased to be voted in as your new Vice-President. I thank all of you for your vote of confidence.

    This also gives me the opportunity to tell you a little bit about myself. I received my license in 1993 and became a member of MAARS shortly thereafter. A couple years later I was asked to serve as net control for the regularly-scheduled Tuesday night net. That is why you are able to hear my sweet sexy voice right in your own home (just joking of course) every Tuesday evening.

    Before receiving my ham license, I found by monitoring the repeater with my scanner that it opened a whole new world for me. I enjoyed hearing about all of the different things that you were observing in and around Manhattan, and still do.

    Studying for the no code technical license took me many hours of writing Braille, studying and struggling to memorize the diagrams. Fred read the manual to me and I Brailled it and then read it back to verify that it was correct. I attended the classes given by Norm and the others and these helped considerably. Braille is also the method that I use to record your callsigns when you check into the net. Even though it is a slow way of recording your calls, I must admit I enjoy every moment of it.

    As you all are aware our membership has declined considerably over the years. We all need to pull together to build back up our membership and secure the funds necessary to maintain our repeater and be able to replace it when the time comes. I am sure you all feel as I do that we would be lost without it. As discussed at the past two or three meetings, MAARS will welcome any and all donations over and above your membership dues to build up our bank account. Was very nice to see all of you all at the MAARS Christmas party. Thanks again to Fred and Nadine for their hospitality.
