    THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

    During the October meeting of MAARS, plans were made for the annual Christmas party to be held on December 11th. Members also discussed possibly replacing the repeater and a committee was formed.

    Our November 12th meeting will be the annual election of officers. All the current officers have volunteered to run again. We encourage any nominations from the floor, and self-nominations are allowed. In order to vote and/or be nominated, you should be a ham and be a paid member of MAARS.

    Another item we will discuss at the meeting is the findings of the committee on repeater replacement. If this is important to you, please be at the meeting. We look forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

    As we have done for the last couple of months, we will be having dinner at a different location. This time we will be getting together at Valentino’s in Manhattan. Valentino’s is located at 3003 Anderson Avenue in Manhattan. This is in the shopping center where Alco is near The Golden Wok. We will meet for dinner at around 5:30 P.M. The Club meeting will begin at 7:30 P.M at the Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Avenue.

    The MAARS meeting for October was on Friday 10/8/2004 at 7:30 at the Red Cross Building. The meeting was conducted by Donna-Rose, NØZKX, Vice-President, in the absence of Brian.

    A committee was selected for a study of the repeater, consisting of Mike, NØPVU, Brian, KCØDWX, and Henry, KAØSWM.

    A nominating committee was also appointed to provide a list of one or more nominations for each office to be voted on at the annual November meeting. These were: Norm, NØJCC, Mike, NØPVU, and Nadine, KØUHF. Additional candidates may be nominated from the floor at the meeting. Self-nominations are also accepted. The election for contested offices shall be by written ballot. Newly elected officers assume their responsibilities at the December meeting. If no majority vote (more than half) is obtained in the first round of voting, then an immediate run-off election shall be held.

    It was decided that the annual Christmas party will be at Fred and Nadine’s residence, starting at 6 P.M. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004. Ham and meatballs are to be included on the dinner menu.

    The September meeting of MAARS was the annual picnic, which was held at the Oregon Trail nature park near Belvue. We grilled food and brought dishes to share. Thanks to all who showed up.

    I will be unable to attend the October meeting on the 9th. Items that should be discussed are formation of a committee to gather information on a new repeater. A new repeater will take care of one or two problems with the current repeater as well as possibly leaving the current repeater as a backup.

    The second item that should be taken care of is a nominating committee. November will be time for election of officers and a committee should make appointments for the offices. Please help the officers at the meeting by volunteering. Don’t forget it is time to renew your membership.

    It was last discussed that dinner would be held at the Village Inn again this month as well so those who can attend should plan on meeting at the Village Inn in Manhattan at 5:30. As usual the meeting will be held at 7:30 P.M. at the Manhattan Red Cross at 2601 Anderson Ave.

    Last month MAARS selected Mike Moore NØPVU as the new trustee to take over from Henry (KAØSWM). Paperwork has been filed with ARRL to make this change.

    The hamfest and Kansas State Convention will be held in Salina on the 15th. Friday’s meeting will be a good time for people to make carpooling arrangements if they are interested in attending this year’s convention.

    The August meeting will be held on August 13, at 7:30 P.M. at 2601 Anderson Ave. in Manhattan. A change this month for dinner after some discussion we have decided to try a new location. We will meet at the Village Inn in Manhattan, across the street from the Mall. Members should arrive around 5:30 for dinner and conversation. As usual, all members and guests as well as anyone with an interest in amateur radio is encouraged to join us at both the eating meeting as well as the club meeting.

    The July meeting was on Friday July 9, 2004 at the Red Cross Building. Brian, KCØDWX, MAARS president, conducted the meeting.

    It was voted to replace Henry, KAØSWM, as repeater trustee, at his request, with Mike Moore, NØPVU. It was decided that a tone squelch card may be installed in the repeater in the near future. It was decided the annual MAARS picnic will be held Sunday, Sept. 26 at Keats. The Salina hamfest and State Convention is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 15. The Warrensburg Area Amateur Radio Club is holding a hamfest at the Johnson County Fair Grounds on Hwy 50 near the CMSU airport just west of Warrensburg.     Hopefully everyone had a safe 4th of July. As you should know MAARS did not hold Field Day this year due to the lack of interest and participation. Hopefully this is something that can be remedied before next year.

    During our June meeting a date was set for a picnic for MAARS. We will hold the picnic on the 26th of September, the location is tentatively set for the Keats Park. Also we discussed that there will be table space available at the Hamfest in Salina on the 15th of August.

    Our July meeting will be held on the 9th at the usual location of 2601 Anderson. We will need to approve a new repeater trustee as Henry has asked over 2 months ago for us to find someone else.

    We hope to see you at the meeting, and you are welcome to join us for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 before out meeting.

    The May meeting for MAARS was held at Fred and Dona-Rose Hackerott’s house on Friday, May 14th in preparation for the garage sale which was held on the 15th. Thank you to all those members who participated in my absence.

    Our next meeting will be held on June the 11th, back at the usual location of 2601 Anderson, and the usual time of 7:30 P.M. The primary purpose of the meeting will be to make plans for Field Day, which will be held on the 26th and 27th of this month. The location decided on was Pott. Co. State fishing lake number 1, which is north of Westmoreland, KS. The location allows for camping and cooking out. Anyone with input on the subject should attend the meeting and feel free to share your ideas.

    We will tentatively plan on having dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan at 5:30 before the normal meeting. We have had some interest in changing this location or moving it from place to place, but I have received very little feedback on the subject. Please offer your opinion if you are one of the people who do or would like to join us for dinner before the meeting. I can be reached at kc0dwx@cox.net.

    During our April meeting for MAARS the members present decided on our Field Day location. The location chosen was Pott. Co. State Lake No. 1., which is just north of Westmoreland, KS. This area will allow for camping out for anyone interested. Field Day is the 4th full weekend in the month of June. This will be June 26th and 27th.

    Hopefully everyone enjoyed the short and hopefully somewhat interesting conversation on GPS and Geocaching that I gave during the April meeting.

    Also during our meeting we had some discussion for the MAARS garage sale which will be held at Fred and Donna Rose Hackerott’s at 629 Allen Rd. on May 15th. The sale will start at 8:00 A.M. and setup at 7:00 A.M. Any items you want to get rid of and would like to donate to the for sale are welcomed. Pricing and a picnic will take place of our normal monthly meeting on Friday night the 14th at around 6:00 P.M . at the same location. All members are encouraged to come. More details will be elsewhere in the newsletter.

    Since we will be having a cookout for the meeting we will not meet for dinner ahead of time for May. Also there has been some discussion as to changing the location of our usual dinner so any input you have would be appreciated. Remember the meeting will be at 629 Allen Rd. and please bring your items to donate on Friday night, as well as any baked goods for the sale. Baked good would best be delivered on Saturday morning and packaged and priced. See you there.

    So how is this weather? Hopefully the warmer weather is allowing everyone to get outside and complete all those projects that have been needing attention, and at the very least giving everyone a good chance to get out and enjoy themselves. Last month Frank Gose (KCØLUG) shared some information on the X Prize project and more specifically the Scaled Composites team lead by Burt Rutan. Thank you to Frank, as I know everyone enjoyed the program and learned some interesting facts.

    Our April meeting will actually be the 3rd Friday in April which will be the 16th. The normal meeting time fell on Good Friday so we decided to move it back a week. I will give a short talk on Geocaching, which was postponed from an earlier meeting since we have had a couple of volunteer programs lately.

    I would like to get suggestions from those that get together with us before the meeting for dinner. As our normal dining place has become quite a bit more expensive over the last year or two, it has been mentioned by a few people that it might be nice to try something different. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Also scheduled for this month is determining our Field Day location. The club had pretty much narrowed everything down to either Pott. Co. Lake #1 or Milford Lake. Both areas sound good and should provide a good location for us to get out and enjoy each others company.

    We will look forward to seeing you on the 16th at the American Red Cross building in Manhattan, 2601 Anderson Ave. And don’t forget to join us around 5:30 at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan for dinner.

    NEW FROM ARRL – Beginning October 1, 2001, our club will receive $15 for each new member joining the ARRL through our club.     Last month Laurie Harrison (KCØKTY) presented us with a bit of information and asked for volunteers with the Civil Emergency Response Team program that Riley County is working on. John Skare (NØPVT) also shared his ‘beefed up’ survival kit that he carries.

    Field Day locations were discussed with the group narrowing down the number of possible locations.

    For our March 12 meeting Frank Gose (KCØLUG) will present us with information on and relating to the X-Prize competition. In short this competition is for the first team that can build a craft that is capable of carrying 3 passengers to an altitude of 100 kilometers (62.5 miles) and return safely as well as repeat this in a certain amount of time. It should prove to be an interesting topic.

    As usual the meeting will be at 7:30 P.M. at 2601 Anderson Ave. We will also meet at the Sirloin Stockade around 5:30 for dinner. I hope to see you there.

    The next meeting for MAARS will be Friday, February 13th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross building located at 2601 Anderson in Manhattan. We will attempt to make a decision on a first and second choice location for this year’s Field Day event. In January we discussed the following locations: Pott. Co. State lake #1, Jeffrey Lake, Mildford lake, Cico Park, Warner Park, Top of the World, Annenberg Park, Gorman Field and the Community Park off of Knots Lane. Hopefully we have had a chance to think about these some, and if you have any other suggestions please let me know, or present them at the meeting on Friday. Field Day will be held on the fourth full weekend in June, which will be the 26th and 27th.

    As you have noticed over the last month, Dona-Rose (NØZKX) and myself have been switching off on doing the weekly club net. This helps to keep one person from having to be tied down to holding the net every week. Anyone interested in holding the net should feel free to contact one of us, and we will be happy to work something out. Holding a net gives one a bit of experience in the operations that might be necessary for emergency communications.

    I intend to give a short program on ‘Geocaching’ using a GPS unit at the meeting. If you have any further information or are interested please feel free to be there and I’ll try to answer any questions I can.

    At around 5:30 P.M. on meeting nights, several members usually get together at the Sirloin Stockade for dinner. Feel free to join us for some social time before the meeting. We hope to see you all at the meeting.

    The MAARS meeting for Jan. 9, 2004 was opened by President Brian, KCØDWX, at 7:30 P.M. Francis, WØEVJ, gave a summary of MAARS activities for the year 2003. Francis also showed a QRP radio transceiver unit, which had been assembled into a single unit, made of a Ramsey 40 M receiver and a xtal-controlled Ramsey transmitter. The package contained also a compartment for a battery and a small 40 M antenna tuner.

    There was a discussion of possible sites for this year’s Field Day. No site was decided upon at this meeting.

    The meeting was closed at about 9:00 P.M., with 15 people in attendance at the meeting.

    It’s time for us to start another year with MAARS. We will be continuing this year with the same officers we had last year and I look forward to working together.

    We finished the year off with another wonderful Christmas party hosted by Fred and Nadine Stueve. We all appreciate their hospitality and have a wonderful time there every year.

    The first meeting of the year will be January 9th at 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross building, 2601 Anderson Ave. We will get people signed up for committees and get some general discussion as to what we want to do over the next year. If you are unable to make the meeting but have some ideas or want to get your name down for a committee then let me know.

    As usual anyone with an interest in Amateur Radio is welcome to attend our meeting, as well as join us at the Sirloin Stockade for dinner and conversation at around 5:30 P.M. We hope to see you there

    The Maars meeting for Nov. 14, 2003 was called by president Brian, KCØDWX, at 7:30 P.M. The first item was the annual election of Maars officers. Since there were no candidates submitted or declared for the offices, and since the present officers indicated a willingness to continue in their present office, it was decided by oral vote to retain them.

    Present at the meeting was Steve Stockham, a representative of the BSA merit badge conference, who discussed the possibility of the Maars participating in the BSA radio merit badge program. No final decision was made at this meeting.

    Next was discussed some details of doing a special event station operation. The first week of June was decided to be an optimum time to hold this event.

    The schedule for the MAARS Christmas party was announced for Sat., Dec. 13 at the Fred and Nadine Stueve residence to start at 6:00 P.M.

    A total of 16 persons attended the meeting.

    A total of 23 persons attended the Christmas party on Dec.13 at the Stueve residence.

    It is with regret that we announce the passing of a prominent local, long time Amateur Roger Medlin, WØHLU, on Jan. 1, 2004. As one MAARS member commented, “He was a ham’s ham.”
