Bike Ride Notes from Jim Foster
Thanks to everyone who volunteered! We’ve hit our minimum, and will be supporting the Cabin Fever Ride (April 11).
Here’s the roster as I have it. Based on availability folks have communicated to me, I’ve made a stab at assigning folks to routes or locations. Of course, feel free to move folks around as need be.
Dave Mills, KDØAZG – Net Control
Nancy Calhoun, NØKMU – Short, turnaround
Myron Calhoun, WØPBV – Short/medium mobile
Francis Sable, WØEVJ – Medium, turnaround
Justin Reed, NØUJQ – Medium/Long
Mark Benfer, KCØQAS – Long
Jay Holmes, KS1EMS – Long
Joining later: Brian Carter, KCØDWX – Long
There are three routes. The links will take you to maps on the Map My Ride web site. Worth noting is that the Medium and Long routes both cross 24 on the outbound leg, but at different points: Flush Rd for the Long and Lake Elbo Rd for the medium.
In fact, the Long route will be coming back into Wamego on 24 from the east, then wandering through Wamego, north a bit then actually ON 24 west towards the end of the route. With the traffic on the roads, it could be interesting.
Short Route: Military Trail Road to St. George Elementary, and back mapmyride.com
Medium Route: Continue past St. George, turn north on Lake Elbo Rd to Lake Elbo entrance, and back. mapmyride.com
Long Route: Continue past St. George, turning north on Flush Road. Continue N across Hwy 24, to Westmoreland. S on 99, turning E on Hartwich. Turning S on Onaga Rd, Hwy 24 to Wamego. - Saturday, May 6
- 8:00 A – noon
- parking lot west of 410 Houston St. (map)
- This is our chance to raise awareness of the MAARS/ARES and what volunteers can do in Manhattan. This will be a ramp up exercise to a larger involvement. We need to setup a portable station. David Mills, KDØAZG, is working on an antenna, and looking for a tripod of some sort to be able to get it up in the air to help us around the buildings downtown. Worst case scenario, we abandon simplex and use the repeater locally. Laurie Harrison has agreed to get us sheets that the county uses for the EOC to keep track of message traffic, a large map for command and hand out maps for the search units. We will have a corresponding message log to compare after action how accurate the messages were relayed and copied. Just remember that the messages need to be numbered so they can be tracked, that could be vital in a true emergency. Maps will have a simple grid system to identify search areas.

================================================================================= WILDCAT WARRIER 5K 2019 / COMPLETE TABLE CODE
Wildcat Warrior 5K, Saturday, April 27

From Jason Johnson, KBØEOD: For the the second consecutive year MAARS is being asked to support the KSU ROTC, sponsored Warrior 5k Run on 27 April, 2019. It will take place along the same route and location as last year. If you were not able to help last year and are unfamiliar, the location is the Kicker Country Stampede concert and camping area, below the Tuttle Creek Dam.
Not only is this an opportunity for Amateur Radio operators to stay involved and support community events, but we have the rare privilege to work with young adults from KSU who are taking an active role in supporting the USO through the Wildcat Warrior 5k. Last year $2000 was raised and was donated to the Fort Riley USO.
In 2018, we had 6 amateur radio operators located at key points along the route, relaying real-time information to Race Net Control on the status of all participants; first male, first female, first youth etc. from the beginning of the race to the very end, providing the Race Director with situational awareness along the entire race route, and in the event of a medical emergency, could call EMS and first responders to a specific location.
We will be communicating via:
Simplex 146.54 MHz
Please e-mail me with your commitment to volunteer to support this event.
Warrior 5k Run

Hello to all. I hope you have done well over the past month. I would like to invite you all to our August meeting, where Herm Belderock, WVØR, will present us with a program on NTS message handling. I think fewer and fewer people are aware of how to deal with NTS messages, and if you have an interest this will be a good time for you to attend. We will plan on the meeting starting around 6:00 P.M. with pizza and a presentation. We will actually try to have food available a bit ahead of that to help us all get a bite to eat before Herm’s presentation.
As our meeting will be at the church again this month and we are having food, we will skip our normal eating meeting, and we need to be out of the church by 8:00 P.M., as they have some other activities as well that night. It might be a good idea to show up around 5:45 to get some food in before the interactive meeting.
Also, the repeater committee has been together and made some choices for things to work on with reference to the repeater. I hope and believe the club will support the choices made by the committee, and while there is no promise it will fix our issue, these are some things that need to be done.
Again I’d like to remind you all that the meeting will be limited time wise, so we will need to keep any discussion and covering of past issues limited.
On October 3rd we will be providing communications for the Yellow Brick Road Bicycle Ride. We need as many hams as possible on this bike ride, as there are 4 routes (overlapping at points), and the longest of which is in the neighborhood of 80 miles. Get with Sylvia (KCØYJO) if you are able to help with this ride. As it stands we may not have too many fixed hams, but more mobile. Feel free to offer ideas, but again, we’ve done these several times with great success, now so let’s make sure it is constructive.
I hope you will all join us for the meeting on August 14th at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Ave. We are not sure what room we will be in, but we will have tables to eat at and work on our presentation by WVØR.
If you would like to have pizza at the meeting, please let us know ASAP and plan on bringing $5 per adult. Any money left over will go towards the picnic in September. Water will be available on location, but if you want something else to drink, bring that as well.
We look forward to seeing you there.
