    Accessibility

This site is built for an ageing membership reading on phones in bad light, which is the same thing as building it for everybody.

    Colour

The palette is the Society’s own, measured from its 1997 stylesheet and kept. Navy #00008C is 15.23:1 against white and magenta #990066 is 8.25:1 — both AAA at any size. The colours were never the problem.

The problem was a white-on-white link bug: a navigation rule set links to white and leaked into the page body when a layout table closed early, leaving invisible links on a white background. That is a code defect, not a design choice, and it is fixed by not laying pages out in tables.

    Images

Alt text: 1,154 images on the old site had none

Every image carried across needs a real description. An empty alt attribute is correct only for decoration; on a photograph of Field Day it is a silent failure no automated check will catch for you.

    Layout

    • Every page on the old site overflowed a 390-pixel phone viewport — measured content widths ran from 508 to 917 pixels. This one reflows to a single column.
    • Navigation is a real list inside a real nav element, not a four-column table.
    • The mobile menu is a labelled “Menu” button rather than a bare hamburger, because icon-only controls test badly with the audience this site actually has.
    • Every interactive element has a visible focus ring, and a skip link is the first thing you reach with the keyboard.

Tell us what does not work

If a page is unreadable for you, say so on the reflector or at a meeting. That is a bug report and it will be treated as one.
