Monthly Newsletter Dedicated to the Advancement of Amateur Radio November, 2001

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Brian Carter, KCØDWX

The November 9th meeting of the Manhattan Area Amateur Radio Society will be the last formal meeting of the year. This means we will be electing officers again. The nominations for officers will be listed later in this month's newsletter. A big thank you goes out to Wayne Dorothy, KBØJOS, for taking time out of his schedule to talk to individuals and submit the nominations. In order to be eligible for office the person must both be a member of MAARS and hold an amateur radio license. In order for persons to vote in for officers you must be a member who has paid their dues for the coming year and they must have been paid by November 1, 2001. For members who are unable to attend the regularly scheduled meeting you may vote on any office by proxy. Article V sec. 5 of the MAARS constitution states: "Any Member who cannot attend a meeting but who wishes to participate in a vote to be made at that meeting may give a written and signed proxy document to another Member, said document must contain explicit instructions on how the proxy holder is to act on behalf of the absent Member."

Nominations and self-nominations may also be made from the floor. So the names listed in this newsletter are not necessarily the only choices for officers. Anyone who is eligible and wishes to be considered for office should make themselves known that the meeting.

I would like to ask that all members of the club think of different things they would like to see or do for upcoming meetings. Keeping people's interest is to the advantage of our hobby. Amateur radio isn't just about electronics and radio waves, but more importantly about building friendships. Through this hobby we make many friendships move near and far, and with a diverse group of people. More often then not you'll find that radio is not the only common interest you have.

Another important order of business for our November meeting will be to decide on having a MAARS Christmas party as well as location and time. For those not familiar the Christmas party is usually great fun for all who attend.

I'd like to say congratulations to Erin Crouch, KBØTXL, Newsletter Editor, and family for the birth of her new baby girl. I'm sure it won't be long before dad has her typing on the computer and grandpa has her talking on the radio.

Our normal eating meeting will take place at the Sirloin Stockade between 5:00 and 5:30 P.M. on November 9th. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy dinner and some conversation. Then at 7:30 our meeting will start at the Red Cross building at 2601 Anderson Ave., Manhattan, KS. I hope to see you all there.

Brian Carter, KCØDWX

SECRETARY'S MINUTES
Francis Sable, WØEVJ

The MAARS meeting for 10/12/2001 started at 7:30 P.M. Brian (KCØDWX) first showed a video about amateur radio satellite operation. After the video showing there was short formal meeting. There was some discussion about the next meeting in November. This is the meeting at which the annual election of officers takes place. According to the MAARS constitution membership dues must be paid to be eligible to vote. To be voted in as an officer a nominee must be a MAARS member. Newly elected officers assume their responsibilities at the December meeting with the exception of the treasurer who takes office one month later. All members should plan to be present at the annual meeting if possible. There were 8 persons in attendance.
