Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio October 2005

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Brian Carter, KCØDWX

I'd like to thank Scott Chainey, ACØCY, for his arranged tour of the Macdonald Lab at Kansas State University in August, and apologize for my lack of making it on the tour. We appreciate the effort to take us on something new.

For September, MAARS had a picnic/cookout at the Oregon Trail Nature Park. Members brought items to cook on the grill, as well as items to share. Myron (WØPBV), Francis (WØEVJ) and Scott (ACØCY), brought HF equipment and set up a working HF station in order to test out various pieces of equipment they had, such as new purchases and grab and go kits.

Our October meeting will be held on the 14th of the month. This will be our next to the last formal meeting of the year. Club dues should be paid at this meeting if not before. We also need a couple people to volunteer for the nominating committee. This is a little more important this year as at least two officers will not be running again next year. The club elections will be at the November meeting, so all nominations need to be made by that point.

The other major topic for our October meeting will need to be plans for our annual Christmas party. A location, time and date need to be set, as well as a partial 'menu'.

Our eating meeting on October 15 will be at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan at 5:30 P.M. We hope that you come and join us for dinner before the regular club meeting. At 7:30 P.M. at the Red Cross in Manhattan. We look forward to seeing you there.

SECRETARY'S REPORT
Francis Sable, WØEVJ

Instead of the regular monthly meeting on the second Friday of the month, the annual picnic was on Sunday, Sept. 18 at the Oregon Trail Nature Park, located north of Belvue. Myron, WØPBV and Francis, WØEVJ, set up separate portable hf antennas near the Park shelter.

Myron made some on-the-air contacts with his portable hf station. One of the contacts was in Oregon on the 20 M band. Scott, ACØCY, also connected his hf transceiver and checked its operation.

Brian and Scott provided the grill for the cookout. Approximately 12 persons attended the picnic.

ARRL DUES

NEW FROM ARRL - Beginning October 1, 2001, our club will receive $15 for each new member joining the ARRL through our club. This is for new members or those who have not been a member for two or more years. There will be no commission for renewals but we still may submit your renewals, if you wish. Since the club retains the dues, it is necessary for you to write your check to MAARS, and then the treasurer writes a check to ARRL.

MAARS DUES

Dues will be due by Oct. 31 and are: regular membership $20, full-time student $10, family $30. Please complete the following when renewing your membership, even if you did so last year. Return to the Treasurer, at a meeting or to MAARS, P. O. Box 613, Manhattan, KS 66505-0613.
