Monthly Newsletter Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio August 2005

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Brian Carter, KCØDWX

Over the past month we have done more experimenting with our new repeater. Most recently KaComm brought us a new antenna to try on the repeater. This new antenna seems to get rid of the desense problem we had when going through the duplexers to a single antenna, which suggests that even though it seems to work well, there is a problem with our old antenna. The antenna that KaComm has loaned us is not as good as the old antenna so you may have noticed some decreased performance in the repeater.

Our next meeting will be this Friday the 12th of August. We will be meeting earlier than usual at 6:00 P.M. and we will meet on the KSU campus for a tour of the Macdonald Lab. Scott Chainey, KCØKTZ has made the arrangements. The best parking area will be the parking lot between Ackert Hall and Rathbone Hall. More information will follow in the newsletter.

Also don't forget the Kansas State Amateur Radio Convention will be held on August 21st in Salina. I plan to take a few items that have been floating around and have been stored at my house for the last couple of years. I do not plan on returning with any of these items and will pass on a list of what I have on the net and at the meeting for anyone interested.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday.

SECRETARY'S REPORT
Francis Sable, WØEVJ

The MAARS meeting for July was conducted by Brian, KCØDWX, on Friday, 7-8-2005 at the Red Cross Building, starting at 7:30 P.M.

There was discussion about volunteering MAARS members to offer to make repairs to Kenny's (KBØRPV) mobile antenna tower. Items mentioned were to purchase and install a new steel cable and to re-paint. A committee was made-up consisting of Mike, Henry, Scott, Fred & Francis to work on this. It was voted to allow an expenditure of up to $200 for this purpose.

Myron, WØPBV, read an interesting story from a 1947 QST about an ice storm that afflicted the Midwest area, mainly Kansas in that year. Mentioned in the story were William Schrenk, WØPAH, and Cliff Simpson, WØYUQ, Manhattan, and others. It gave details of some of the emergency message traffic they handled during that time.

Plans were discussed about having the annual picnic at the Oregon Trail Park, near Belvue, on Sunday, Sept. 18 or Sunday, Sept. 25.

A decision was made to install a separate receiving antenna at the repeater if necessary to relieve the desense problem with the new repeater transceiver.

For the next MAARS meeting , we will meet in room 119 of Cardwell Hall, KSU, for a tour of the facilities there.

There were 13 people in attendance
