Monthly Newsletter  Supporting the Advancement of Amateur Radio  February 2009

THE PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Brian Carter, KCØDWX

Hello to all and I hope you have enjoyed some of the nice warm weather we have had over the past week or two. I apologize for the lack of a formal newsletter, but I'm behind in info to include and want to make sure you know of a couple of very important pieces of information as soon as possible.

First big thing for this month is our meeting location. Due to that fact that there is a major remodeling project occurring at our normal meeting location of the Red Cross, we needed to find a different location for this month's meeting. We have been given permission to hold our meeting at the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue in Manhattan. Anyone needing help finding this location, please let me know I will try to help you out as well you should feel free to get on the repeater on your way to the meeting and ask for help. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it is beyond our control.

Next we need very badly to get a feel for the number of people who can help out with communications for the Cabin Fever Bike Ride on Saturday, March 28 in Pott. County. We made an excellent impression on this organizers of the bike ride, as well as the Manhattan bike ride last year, and need to continue our support or fail horribly at what we claim we as hams can do. Please contact Sylvia (KCØYJO) at the meeting or on the nets, and let her know if you will help with this ride. It is far better to have too many people than not quite enough. APRS capabilities and such might be a nice addition to last year's bike rides for those that can help in those ways.

I intend to give a short (you can all hope) talk on solar power as a possibility for your personal stations, and give you a few beginner tips. I will be covering with some limited knowledge, batteries, charging, commercially available solar panels and lighting possibilities. I will try to bring along a couple of photos, as well as examples of low voltage lighting that might be useful.

MAARS will meet for dinner at the Sirloin Stockade in Manhattan around 5:30 for conversation and dinner. After the meeting will move to the Manhattan Church of Christ, 2510 Dickens Avenue in Manhattan, for our regular club meeting to begin at 7:30 P.M. I hope to see many of you there.

ARRL DUES

NEW FROM ARRL - Beginning October 1, 2001, our club will receive $15 for each new member joining the ARRL through our club. This is for new members or those who have not been a member for two or more years. There will be no commission for renewals but we still may submit your renewals, if you wish. Since the club retains the dues, it is necessary for you to write your check to MAARS, and then the treasurer writes a check to ARRL.

MAARS DUES

Dues will be due by Oct. 31 and are: regular membership $20, full-time student $10, family $30. Please complete the following when renewing your membership, even if you did so last year. Return to the Treasurer, at a meeting or to MAARS, P. O. Box 613, Manhattan, KS 66505-0613. If you are currently receiving both the email and paper copy of the newsletter, please consider just receiving the email copy. It will save the club $5-6.00 per year per copy.
